The M's (First Ep)
About This Album
When the M's made their debut in 2002 with their self-titled EP, their slinky garage rock style spread like wild fire. Opening shows for the likes of the Walkmen and the French Kicks surely had something to do with it, but the M's weren't exactly prepared for such a response. Signing to Brilliante with their name charging full steam ahead of them, the M's returned in a year's time to reissue their newly classic eponymous release. Despite being a Chicago band, the M's get down and dirty with Southern rock stylings, work in a few '60s Brit rock riffs, and add a dash of new millennium electronic beats, to create a slick, rock & roll shindig of their own. "Banishment of Love" and "Break Our Bones" combine the love of such musings, while brand new tracks like "Bringing Up the Bees" and "Sexy Suzy" indicate a slight change of direction. One can tell that they're less concerned with being sharp on these latter two tracks, or being quirky and inventive; but on the whole, an enjoyable, indie-tailored sound is, apparently, what they're going for -- for now. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide
