About This Album
If you're going to pillage someone else's ideas, then go for broke. Because even if you find yourself crammed between the barriers of creative space, utterly at a loss for ideas, expression, or thought, you'd still have a self-respect buzzing in your ear like a mad angelic insect, putting down the newspaper and taking out a cigar to remind you that, hell, if want to sound like Radiohead when even Thom Yorke doesn't want to sound like Radiohead, you might as well take it to preposterous, bombastic, over-the-top levels. Add church organs, mental electronics, riffs bouncing off each other like the monolithic screams in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and you'll finally be in position to crack skulls like coconuts and make the world's speakers ooze gooey blood. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide

Even if Muse did sound like Radiohead in the beginning, I would say that the new album is progressive from what they have done in the past. Whether you like it or not it is very different, and yet still the same, as their past songs. Everyone tries to find similarities between bands for some reason and it makes no sense to me. Who cares if their the same if you like the music, just enjoy it.

Muse is a spectacularl y talented band. It is quite unfair to accuse the band of lacking self expression just because they share similarities with another group. Isn't that what this music genome thing is all about? All of music is interconnect e d at least as much as Muse and Radiohead are, or as much as Led Zepplin and blues music; the list goes on. Their are less obvious examples out their too. Compare Neil Young's guitar style to Jimi Hendrix.
To say that Muse is unoriginal because they are |
So what if Radiohead and Muse are kind of similar. Muse is still a good band and so is Radiohead. Elitism really is stupid. It keeps you from enjoying a number of good things in life.
While completely avoiding comparing Radiohead and Muse, I’d like to say that I think that the review was brilliantly written and definitely worth a laugh.
I guess Muse's first album can be somewhat compared to Radiohead, but considering how original they really are, Muse shouldn't be compared to any one at all. They're both great bands, but Muse is my personal favorite of all time! They're AMAZING. :)
im so frusterated. . . i can only find black hols and revelations in the stores in the united states. muse completely rocks!!!!!!
What a bizarre review; there's no real critique of the album, just bile.
Most of the Muse = Radiohead reviews came from a time when their sounds were more closely linked. I think you're hard pressed to Listen to "Black Holes and Revelations" (2006) and "In Rainbows" (2007) and say "These Muse chaps are ripping off Radiohead!" Like the reviewer said, Radiohead got away from their original sound, where Muse kept using it. It'd be like saying China = Russia or something equally outdated...
jackie 211 how can you say Radiohead has no piano? Have you ever heard You and Whose Army? Like Spinning Plates? Karma Police has piano just to name 3 off the top of my head. If you have ever seen Radiohead play live you will understand why they need 5 members, Jonny plays a ton of other instruments during shows...
i think this reviewer can go screw himself. i don't even think he would know what would be going on because he's living in such a state of ignorant bliss.
and this description is disgusting.. what idiot wrote it
one of they're best albums. I am a diehard muse fan and i hate radiohead lol... i can't think of one song i've heard by them i liked
Jaharris had it so right. i love both radiohead and muse almost equally... eh still undecided about that. but what the hell is up with this review. it kinda makes me angry knowing this review is what everyone who plays this album on here. fix it pandora!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I like every single song that muse has ever made but I think my overall favorite CD has to be this one cause theirs a lot of piano Darkshines is mi amore.
and cant forget about that newborn ;D |
this is actually a great, really rocking album. i love radiohead too but give this cd a chance!
I am constantly listening to Radiohead (new and old), and yet I don't see that many similarities with Muse. After reading this review I wonder if I am missing something?
This version of Space Dementia sounds like a live version, it's not the one on the physical CD.
P.S. Ever tried cracking a coconut? It's really hard. A little bit of a misplaced metaphor there. |
im obsessed with radiohead and unlike most diehard RH fans i came to love muse too. cant have too much of a good thing in my opinion. its preposterous to say that a sound is yours. Anyone is free to experiment and add their own intricacies. i find that the two bands are fundamentaly similar but thats what makes them great. Its like me claiming i play football, sweeper is my position and anyone who plays sweeper in a football match is copying me. Its my position and only I know how to perform.

People always want to talk about a band "maturing", but if you kick a** at what you do and everyone likes it, why change? Just because Radiohead decides to do something totally different on every album, doesn't make them any better for it. To say that you have to change your sound to be a good band is posturing and nothing more.
Muse may have sounded like Radiohead in the beginning, but they are nothing alike now. I gues they both have high-pitched singers, but what band doesn't it seems no |
WOW - sweet unbiased opinon in that musical review. Is that review written by the Radiohead fan club?
Radiohead and Muse don't even compare! Muse's sound is much bigger - if you must have a frame of reference, I'd say this album (and Absolution more so) sound like Queen - big, soaring, arena rock. Maybe the warbling of the lead singers is similar (which I love) - but comparing bands that way shows a lack of original thought. Sure, the first question anyone asks when you tell them about music is "who do they sound like?" Don't ask, just listen. You stumble onto more great music that way.

Why does Plain White T's have five members? There are WAY too many bands who all sound like eachother, like that Plain White T's/ All American Rejects/Cart e l stlye. But of course I assume there are variations in this style, and those who are experts on it (like most of us here, experts on variations in electronica/ r o c k ) can beg that there are differences. Probably there are but I personally think that that music isn't too great. It's 'catchy' compared to Muse.
Essential. Radiohead: has no piano, has no british accent (even though they are from Britain? Um, it was in style to supress that accent in the sixties, not now). And what in the world are they doing with FIVE MEMBERS? What good band needs five members? Muse has only three. Three members and that makes: two guitars, one bass, two on sythezizer, one pianist, three vocalists, one drummer/perc u s s i o n i s t , o n e string composer, and one talented band!!
Not that similar to Radiohead, I guess. More electronic, more accent, more...stuff . Muse is alright.
what i dont understand is how this guy or anybody can say muse is like radiohead! I am a radiohead fan as well but anybody who says that must not be really listening to the music, while I admit that the two have some of the same musical qualities they are completely different in style! Muse has their hardcore bass lines along with a great guitar and epic drummer! not to mention Mr.Bellamy's amazing piano skill and voice! you cant really compare the two.
I'm a big Muse and Radiohead fan. While there are similarities between the two, namely their experimental spirit, I think that Muse are unfairly dubbed as a Radiohead clone. Just listen to their music side by side. Muse are obviously much more influenced by hard rock and they do their own thing. You can't really compare them much further than Muse being inspired by Radiohead's music.
Radiohead established the sound that every Muse song reflects.
Yorke's voice isn't that similar to Muse's. Radiohead was there first, and continue to break musical ground with each release. It's undeniable. Muse hasn't seemed to mature really, take Radiohead from Pablo honey to In Rainbows. Totally different. |
Thanks laser. I'm sure all of us Muse fans feel good about your comments. I recently ranted out someone just like you. What is it with you Radiohead people? I swear, it's like politics. The Radiohead Party and the Muse party. Why can't you just stay away from the Muse threads? Because if you take two seconds and just listen to Muse, they aren't like Radiohead. Key among tons of other things: THE BRITISH ACCENT. Thom Yorke has no British accent. Makes a world of difference.
That was an awesome review! Good job Mr. Carlson at boiling everything down to bare essentials. Keep in mind though, that consistently sounding like another successful group is only a bad thing if you aren't in it for the money.
Worst review ever muse is not Radiohead and ppl say that they do only bcuz they think it not here it also NO ONE AGREES WITH YOU
