Apart from a little more drama, a notion set with the desperate urgency of opening track "Closer," not much makes Year of the Gentleman, Ne-Yo's third album in as many years, all that different from In My Own Words or Because of You. If there are any real shake-ups in the songwriter/singer's m.o., they are subtle, not glaring, typically evident only in the production wrinkles brought by his collaborators. Had each album been separated by a few years of inactivity, this lack of change might be an issue, but since breaking out with Mario's "Let Me Love You" in 2004, Ne-Yo has been nothing if not steady and consistent, a constant presence in the R&B chart who probably could not devise a gimmick if his career depended upon it -- unless you hold those natural and often uncanny Michael Jackson vocalisms, as present as ever throughout highlight "Nobody," against him. What makes the album slightly less satisfying than Ne-Yo's first two albums is that the ballads are slightly sappier and overwrought. The odds are in his favor, however, that no one has written a more gorgeous song about slothful self-loathing. That song, "Why Does She Stay," forms the front end of a two-track patch of glorious gloom -- the album's center, both literally and figuratively -- complemented by "Fade into the Background," where he watches the one who got away get married. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
Must say I disagree with the review as well, Ne-Yo is the artist that sparked my interest in R&B in the first place, I think anybody that has had a meaningful relationship can relate to his lyrics, good stuff.
Who ever wrote the review sucks I LOVE NE-YO and WHY DOES SHE STAY IS BEUTIFUL!!! I'm sure there are a lot of ladies aside from myself who can relate to that song, you keep it up NE-YO!!!!! ;)
Who wrote this review for Pandora? Are they serious? Ne-Yo is very talented and, as stated by other listeners, does not deserve this negative review. Love the song, "Single" on this album.
Pandora, What is wrong with you.. This is by far his best work ever!! Shame on you for giving Ne-yo a bad review. His music is a hell of alot better than the crap that you deem good...
It is sad in more ways then one, that Pandora would give such a poor review on such a great album. Ne-Yo, over the years has given us hit after hit with extreme talent year after year shame on you Pandora for not acknowleding that. Every album always has several great singles that stay on the charts for you to down play his talent is shameful again shame on you Pandora.
How disappointing that Pandora downplayed Neyo's albums. Neyo has consistently in the last few years put out good music and every album has had several good singles. He is known for his love ballads and catchy beats in his up tempo songs, why is it being called sappy. It may not be your choice of music but for those of us that enjoy that genre can attest that as you mentioned, he has been consistent with good albums. Single is definitley my favorite on this album. I speak for many ppl, we welcom
I like this far better than the other albums listed here, especially that Ray J crap....Ms. Independent isn't the best he's done, but it's better Sexy Can I.....
I can't believe people actually like the Miss Independent song. It's just another track in the long list of cookie-cutter singles in the "independent woman" fad. It lacks the songwriting and rhythmic pace I like from most of Neyo's other singles.
