This is one case where the legend really precedes the record itself. Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino's studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters. Which isn't to say that they were devoid of original material, since even at this stage Kurt Cobain illustrated signs of his considerable songcraft, particularly on the minor-key ballad "About a Girl" and the dense churn of "Blew." A few songs come close to that level, but that's more a triumph of sound than structure, as "Negative Creep" and "School" get by on attitude and churn, while the cover of "Love Buzz" winds up being one of the highlights because this gives a true menace to their sound, thanks to its menacing melody. The rest of it sinks into the sludge, as the group itself winds up succumbing to grinding sub-metallic riffing that has little power, due to lack of riffs and lack of a good drummer. Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn't a lost classic -- it's a debut from a band that shows potential but haven't yet achieved it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
this is probably my favorite nirvana album. i love how people always say "oh yeah, im their biggest fan" but didnt know that they had any other albums before nevermind.
I'm not sure I aree with the whole "lack of a good drummer" comment. I mean, Dale Crover plays drums on a few of these songs, most of which are my favorite on the CD. Floyd The Barber and Paper Cuts are freakin' HEAVY, which is the side of Nirvana I've always preferred. I could really do without "About A Girl", but that's just my opinion.
BOOMERDMX88 SAYS: EVERYTIME I HEAR NIRVANA I WANT TO GO GET MY SHOTGUN AND BLOW MY BRAINS OUT---JUST TO UNDERSTAND WHAT KURT WAS TRYING TO CONVEY TO HIS FANS.......
BETTER TO DIE AT YOUR BRIGHTEST INSTEAD OF FADE'ING AWAY. HA HA!
the songs on bleach are so raw and emotional, much more so than many of the songs that kurt later wrote. these songs range from insane screaming to rhythmic melodies to almost nauseating (in a good way) grunge. pretty much every song on here is worth listening to. this is one of those CDs that you can put in your CD player and not even touch the track-select button. this is nirvana, at its core. this is music coming from cobain the human being, not cobain the music god.
this review is bullshit. this is, in my opinion, nirvana's best! they didn't get diluted by posers claiming to be nirvana fans ever since september 1991. they were edgey and punk and this is a truly grunge album. and why is everyone hating on chad channing? chad was a fine drummer.
i won't bring up the fact that Smells Like Teen Spirit is a Boston ripoff or that Come As You Are is ripped from Killing Jokes "the 80's". Kurt knew that and acknowledged his debt. He wore his influences on his sleeve. Cobain was cool but his time passed, he knew that.
check out the song Starvation by Golden Dawn it's from the 60's. Cobain totally stole the riff and used it for About A Girl. In fact you can put the two songs together and they match perfectly. Whats up with that? I agree, until Grohl joined they just were not as tight, But bleach is an O.K. debut, not great but O.K.
Bleach is a perfect example of how important a good drummer is. Yes, by the time they hit big Kurt had matured as a songwriter and performer, but you can't argue that the missing element from their sound through the first part of their career was the thundering drums. Dave Grohl came along and unintentionally re-invented Nirvana with his monster playing, and in doing so changed the sound of music.
Don't insult someone by calling them gay. Come on! Are we in the middle ages? Oh that's right, this is the internet, which by law says that everybody is a 10 year old boy that has a severe case of homophobia.
great album that helped to establish a following for a great band not as good as nevermind or in utero but is good in its own way plus it was recorded for only 600 dollars id say it f**king amazing to only be recorded for 600 dollars
Stephen Thomas Erlewine is an a**. Bleach is the best album ever. The only thing that would make it better is if there were about 100 more songs on it. Pandora really should put up a review from someone else.
I would have liked to see this guy's review the album before Nirvana exploded onto the scene with Nevermind. I highly doubt he would have been as kind as he was not knowing what the future of the band was to come.
I agree more with collins than with the reviewer. It is not mostly "sludge". The album is one of a kind and great grunge before their was such a thing. Every song is good, About a Girl is a great song.
