Led by the infectious, pseudo-new wave single "Just a Girl," No Doubt's major-label debut, Tragic Kingdom, straddles the line between '90s punk, third-wave ska, and pop sensibility. The record was produced by Matthew Wilder, the auteur behind "Break My Stride" -- a clever mainstream co-opting of new wave quirkiness, and, as such, an ideal pairing. Wilder kept his production lean and accessible, accentuating No Doubt's appealing mix of new wave melodicism, post-grunge rock, and West Coast sunshine. Even though the band isn't always able to fuse its edgy energy with pop melodies, the combination worked far better than anyone could have hoped. When everything does click, the record is pure fun, even if some of the album makes you wish they could sustain that energy throughout the record. Tragic Kingdom might not have made much of an impact upon its initial release in late 1995, but throughout 1996 "Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs" positively ruled the airwaves, both alternative and mainstream, and in 1997 No Doubt cemented their cross-generational appeal with the ballad hit "Don't Speak." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
I had this on cassette tape back in middle school. I went to summer camp and listened to this on my Walkman in the evenings. Very nostalgic for me! Lots of good songs... I LOVE belting out "Just a Girl," but really, there are only a few forgettable songs on here and almost everything else ranges from good to really really good.
This is the band my Mother and Father would punish me with. My room was filled to the brim with NxD crap and if my grades sucked you know most parents ground there kid and take tv radio going out away...Yeah for me they got me where it hurt..TOOK DOWN MY POSTERS TOOK MY RECORDS AND CD'S MY T-SHIRTS EVERYTHING! I still prefer self title and Beacon Street Collection to the later stuff...1995 when this came out I thought I was going to poop myself. *~LuvND4Ever~*
Technically, the band never broke up--they just decided to pursue their own separate interests for awhile. I keep hearing that they're in the process of another album--which I will buy in heartbeat, as they're my fave group of all time. And as for buying the album without a credit card, try either going to a store the buys used CD's, such as Hastings, or use PayPal and your checking account online.
I REALLY WANT TO BUY THAT ALBUM!!but..im not sure if they sell it at the stores anymore cuz the band broke up years ago.,......i think and i cant buy it here cuz i dont have a credit card
This album is awesome, I remember getting it for Christmas when I was in 6th grade. I wore that thing out. All of the songs on it are good and unique. Very good sound.
