About This Album
Novatone's debut album was a fair combo of classic rock and more modern alternative rock influences, flavored but not dominated by the 1990s-2000s Seattle scene in which the band was rooted. There are sometimes the hard rock guitars and straining quasi-anthemic vocals you might expect a group from the region to offer. But there are also reasonably diverse accents, such as the subdued soul-funk of "Perfect," the gentle atmospheric balladry of "This Time," and the downright poppy hooks of "The Goods" and "I Know." There are also some of the more bombastic qualities to be found in many Seattle bands of their generation, like the metallic guitars and arching dynamics of "Easy," the very '70s alternation of molten and fluid licks in "Borrowing," and the '70s Rolling Stonesy insouciance of "Hand Me Down" and "Does She Want Me." The tone is brooding and the material well-constructed and well-executed, though it's more an accomplished blend of styles than an original voice. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
