About This Album
Pacific UV filled the gap between full-length albums with this four-track E.P., released three years after its self-titled debut and anticipating its second album, scheduled for the winter of 2007. "Know" rocked surprisingly hard in the manner of the Velvet Underground and the Jesus and Mary Chain, at least for its first couple of minutes before abruptly slowing down for its second half. "Chemical" started slow, then sped up, sounding like a garage rock track that could have fit comfortably on the Nuggets compilation, complete with a guitar line like a diving bumble bee. Both songs featured lovelorn lyrics with a masochistic tinge. "It's okay, I don't mind a little pain," was a line in "Know," while the chorus of "Chemical" went, "I will tear myself in two for you." Happier romantic sentiments could be heard in the slow tempo "50s," its title apparently alluding to the doo wop era, and it was possible to imagine high school students dancing close as the singer somnolently intoned, "Oh, baby, I'm in love with you," that is, in an alternate universe, perhaps. The disc concluded with Eluvium's remix of the shimmering instrumental "L.A.P.D. vs. N.Y.P.D." from the Pacific UV album. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
