The Very Best of Peabo Bryson is one of the best Bryson best-ofs that has been released in the last decade, containing 16 of the singer's best-known singles. The lowest performing track here, 1977's "I Can Make It Better," still managed to reach number 23 on the R&B chart, so that indicates that the set plays it straight, with no deep album cuts placed in favor of relatively popular material. Though it's a little jarring to listen from beginning to end -- rather than sequence the songs chronologically, the compilers decided to constantly switch back and forth from the '70s/early '80s to the late '80s/early '90s -- it favorably highlights Bryson's earlier solo hits ("Reaching for the Sky," "I Can Make It Better") while also providing the big duets ("Tonight, I Celebrate My Love," "Gimme Some Time," "A Whole New World"), in addition to some other quiet storm staples ("If Ever You're in My Arms Again," "I'm So into You"). ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
