About This Album
Three years after the release of its debut Mer de Noms, A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step sees the light of day. By that time, Troy van Leeuwen and Paz Lenchantin had left and been replaced by bassist Jeordie Osborne White, formerly of Marilyn Manson, and guitarist James Iha, formerly of the Smashing Pumpkins (though he doe not appear on the album). While van Leeuwen appear on part of the set, guitarist Danny Lohner helped out after he departed. Amazingly, despite the changes, the sound is still very much the creation of Billy Howerdel with the unmistakable vocal of Maynard Keenan from Tool. Produced by Howerdel and mixed by the inimitable Andy Wallace, Thirteenth Step is a moodier, tenser, and more atmospheric (if that is possible) recording than its predecessor. Written mostly by Howerdel and Keenan, the songs traverse a particular associated with surrender, loss, having the nature of a person stripped away, and turning in the twilight of those feelings toward a kind of slow transformation into something that can only be called "other." There are no easy outs and no easy answers, only hard questions throughout "Weak and Powerless," where surrender is necessary but far from desired.

This album helped get me clean from a 12 year addiction to methamphetam i n e . Thank you Maynard. The poetry he wrote expresses so many of the emotions one faces when forced to look in the dark, ugly areas of ones own psyche. Been clean for 3 years now and I can honestly attribute some of that success to this album. Was quite an eye opener for me.

As a person that has been in recovery I can honestly say I know what the thirteenth step represents. In recovery a person is most likely to relapse and go back to the drugs and or alcohol in the first year so it is primarily relapse prevention. So it is suggested to not get into a relationship , change jobs or move in that year. The thirteenth step came from this suggestion. It is where a person that has been in recovery for more than a year hooks

there is not a single project that maynard puts his hands in that doesn't just simply amaze me. one of a kind.

tool is one of the keys to realizing that all we have been taught from childhood is merely perspectives . after we learn how people formed their own perspectives we can train our minds to form our own. will you follow the model set forth by others, or live life and figure it out on your own? do you want to follow that which was created to lead you (like a dog on a leash), or do you stray from the beaten paths and forge your own heading?

i have seen the comment about the title being a reference to the 12 steps of AA in several places, but did MJK or Howerdel ever say that? to me it seems to be an obvious reference to the 13 steps to the gallows, especially considering the suicidal overtones of "The Outsider", "The Noose",and "Blue"... and the rest of the album for that matter. of course, with MJK involved, i suppose it's possible that it could have several meanings, as do the songs.

The reason why APC and Tool do not accept your pretty little fairy tale religion is becasue it is intergral to the sound of the bands(Tool and APC). Also it is the thematic elements of dissillusion m e n t ( I hope I spelled this right) with God and the emptiness in the words of the preacher who says he can heal when all he does is destroy and lie, his lies do nothing to salve the deep wounds the world has given. I know that sounded really emo, but that is why APC and Tool don't like God.

Amazing album- I am usually let down by follow ups, getting all hyped up then buying it, only to be let down: Not so with this one...I didn't think it was possible, but I think I fell in love even more with APC after this came out.

I love the sound of this group. I love the sound of Tool as well. The only drawback is that they obviously do not like anything that represents christianity . I'm no saint but for me it's a bitter sweet relationship when it comes to these groups. I wish they could be neutral about religion and just rock...
