2001's A Sign of the Times is a new live album recorded during Petula Clark's 2001 tour of the U.S. At 69 years old, Clark is the grande dame of British adult contemporary pop, and as such, the proceedings feel more like a visit from a beloved dignitary than an actual concert. There's a certain stuffiness to the proceedings, from her stilted banter with guests Lou Rawls and Richard Carpenter to the tacky showiness of the chorale backing vocalists on about five of the songs. That said, Clark still has one of the most remarkable voices in British popular music, and the program, collecting tunes from her mid-'60s chart heyday to "With One Look," her showstopper from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, which she was starring in on a U.S. tour that year, is a solid overview of why she's still so beloved by her legions of fans. However, only those diehards will really be interested in this curio. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
