About This Album
One important aspect of Phil K.'s contribution to the dance music scene is the fact that he doesn't let himself be pigeonholed too easily. Yes, his work fits generally within the breakbeat category, but his contribution to the celebrated Y4K series finds him happily breaking the rules, dabbling in a sturdy house beat here, a spacey dubwise effect there, and vocals all over the place. In fact, what really sets this album apart from most of its competitors is the predominance of genuine songs, most of which are very good and some of which are excellent. Combine them with consistently compelling beats and you end up with a solid winner. Highlights here include NuBreed's fine version of the oft-covered Stevie Wonder classic "To Know You Is to Love You," Jahcoozi's dub-inflected "Fish (Team Natascha Remix)," and Monuque Habersham 's brilliant "Cloudbrake." On the less-thrilling side is Tiga's "Pleasure from the Bass," which is built on a perfectly fine groove but which features tedious and superfluous vocals. Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
