Rift is a concept album. The leaders of the jam band movement would have been silly to leave this classic rock motif alone and we are glad they didn't. This is the most coherent album that the Vermont quartet has released to date. With sweeping landscapes and subtle harmonies that echo all things sleep. There is, of course, plenty of humor and repetition on this album which is par for the course for Phish who just happened to nail it on the head with this one.
The artist of the "Rift" cover is Jim Pollack...and yes, he is special...he's done a ton of artwork for Phish...check out 1-20 of the live phish series, he did all the artwork on those...not to mention numerous posters & showbills.... As far as the album goes, this is the album that almost broke up the boys back in the day. As the story goes they fought over the production and all 4 were thinking the whole album sounds over-produced...personally it has some of my faves by Phish...Maze, The Wedg
can you say GREATNESS Phish - from an era when bands had talent...this is the essential Phish album - you've heard them play all these songs live, but there's something great about the studio versions too. VIVA PHISH!
