This is a 100-minute video of a concert given during the 1989 tour by the edition of Pink Floyd sans Roger Waters. It's an extravaganza, to be sure, but somewhat hollow, and the material David Gilmour has worked up for the band doesn't match Waters' compositions. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

David Gilmour was by far the musical talent in Pink FLoyd. Roger just could not deal with his own ego and destroyed the band that is until David pulled it back together and went on produced two great studio albums. Division Bell is by far one of their best!

I disagree with mlk55. Roger waters made pink floyd. They went soft the same way genesis went when gabriel left

What would "Shine On" be without Wrights classy keys,he and Mason were just as important to the sound as those other guys, Waters just let it go to his head and turned out to be kind of a jerk towards the end. Floyd was the sum of the parts each member put in. I think

for sure this is the best album that David Gilmour released playing Floyd songs but yes it does somehow seem hollow or lacking without Waters in there.

While I agree that Pink Floyd's classic incarnation was better than the albums that came after their Waters-less reincarnatio n ; I also have to say that Division Bell in particular was better than anything Waters did, in or outside of Pink Floyd, post-"The Wall."
I do think of Waters when I hear "The Dark Side of the Moon" though. |

I do believe William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide really misses the point that Gilmour is Pink Floyd. I also wonder if he's the guy who selected the above "similar albums"????? LOL ...Cutting Crew---REALL Y ? ? ? ? ?

As far as whos the better singer , They both seemed to have the right vioce for the parts that they each sang in the Floyd tunes.The contrast is part of what made the songs as great as they were.

I don't buy the whole Waters / Gilmour debate to begin with. Leaving aside Mr. Barrett's contribution s of course, latter day Pink Floyd is Waters AND Gilmour. The tension, the differences, the combination of their skills were what made the band great.

You want to see who is the better singer, watch the Roger Waters concert DVD and the Pulse DVD with Gilmour. David Gilmour is so much better. In fact Waters doesn't even do a lot of the singing. David Gilmour can at least sing the Waters Pink Floyd tunes.

I agree with the commenters that the album is awesome. I never want 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' to end. However, I will definitely say that Roger Waters is a much better singer than David Gilmour.... Still it's freaking awesome.

The reviewer is an idiot. Gilmour's voice, his virtuosity and crafting of music all come through beautifully in this album! The tight sound that the entire band creates is impressive. It is one of the best live albums out there, hands down. I agree with dickb26: Waters is just a bit too cynical. Yeah, in case it's not obvious: I absolutely LOVE David Gilmour!

Gotta agree with the pans of this review. I think Gilmour always got to the soul of the music of the group. At least, for me he did, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Again, I find another Pink Floyd album review that is severely lacking in depth, and description while being skewed objectively. Put this right up there with Pandora's review of The Wall.

If you like the Floyd check out the DVD "Live in Pompeii" its a good program of their early work.

Floyd without Water's gargantuan ego and cynicism let Gilmour's guitar shine. He is one of the very best. The reviewer is a bozo.

With the exception of Dark Side of the Moon, This the best album Pink Floyd has ever put out. The suttle changes in the music makes each song better than the origional. Also, the sax player is the best they ever had.

I don't understand why AMG has Ruhlmann reviewing albums - I don't think I've EVER seen a positive review over his name; he always has to say something nasty about whoever he's writing about.

William Rhulmann is an a**. He does several reviews and all he does is hate on people. millions of people love gilmour... on the other hand my guess is that even William Rhulmann's dog hates his guts.

At the time it came out I would have agreed with the comentator,
but now it sounds like Gilmour starting to shake off the anger and take Floyd into the next era. |
