About This Album
With a mere 13 tracks on this disc of film music by Nino Rota, it is fitting one is given to his best-known piece, the Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and that two are given to Speak Softly Love and The Godfather Waltz from his Academy Award-winning score for The Godfather Part II directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and flat-out wonderful that seven of them are given to his scores for films directed by Federico Fellini: Juliet of the Spirits, La Strada, Satyricon,La Dolce Vita, Casanova, 8 1/2, and Amacord. Each track, along with the Overture to The Taming of the Shrew, the "Theme" from The Glass Mountain and the "Theme" from Death on the Nile, is granted a strong and colorful performance by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of one of four different conductors: Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens, and, best of all, Derek Wadsworth in the Fellini scores. For the occasional Rota buff, this disc will provide an excellent introduction. For the dedicated Rota aficionado, this disc will provide a representative sampling of his work. Silva Screen's on location in Prague digital sound is rich, detailed, and often very loud. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
