Queen were straining at the boundaries of hard rock and heavy metal on Sheer Heart Attack, but they broke down all the barricades on A Night at the Opera, a self-consciously ridiculous and overblown hard rock masterpiece. Using the multi-layered guitars of its predecessor as a foundation, A Night at the Opera encompasses metal ("Death on Two Legs," "Sweet Lady"), pop (the lovely, shimmering "You're My Best Friend"), campy British music hall ("Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," "Seaside Rendezvous"), and mystical prog rock ("'39," "The Prophet's Song"), eventually bringing it all together on the pseudo-operatic "Bohemian Rhapsody." In short, it's a lot like Queen's own version of Led Zeppelin IV, but where Zep find dark menace in bombast, Queen celebrate their own pomposity. No one in the band takes anything too seriously, otherwise the arrangements wouldn't be as ludicrously exaggerated as they are. But the appeal -- and the influence -- of A Night at the Opera is in its detailed, meticulous productions. It's prog rock with a sense of humor as well as dynamics, and Queen never bettered their approach anywhere else. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
The song was written in '75, performed on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and went huge. Came out before the Aids epidemic was known as Aids. Record execs hated the song and didn't want it on the album. It went to a hit that week.
My Mom, Aunt, and I do a lot of Queen songs driving in the car but really any song is freakin awesome. But my all-time fav is "Show Must Go On". (Not on this album) :)
I found this record in a box of junk from a garage sale when I was in college. Damn it's a good album. The record itself is a little warped, but plays well just the same. Nothing else even resembles this group's sound. They were simply wonderful.
One of the most fulfilling music compilations ever. I saw many concerts in my life but Queen was the most memorable by far. Freddy Murcury was a genius
This is an incredible collection of styles, funny and meaningful, dark tempest to corny ukulele. Very comprehensive attention getting album. Queen is likely the most versatile rock band of all time.
