Pablo Honey in no way was adequate preparation for its epic, sprawling follow-up, The Bends. Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best moments of Pablo Honey, Radiohead create a grand and forceful sound that nevertheless resonates with anguish and despair -- it's cerebral anthemic rock. Occasionally, the album displays its influences, whether it's U2, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., or the Pixies, but Radiohead turn clichés inside out, making each song sound bracingly fresh. Thom Yorke's tortured lyrics give the album a melancholy undercurrent, as does the surging, textured music. But what makes The Bends so remarkable is that it marries such ambitious, and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. It makes the record compelling upon first listen, but it reveals new details with each listen, and soon it becomes apparent that with The Bends, Radiohead have reinvented anthemic rock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Radiohead has been around longer than Coldplay though. They are different kinds of bands. Radiohead is much more experimental and heavy lyrically while Coldplay is much lighter has a more pop sound. True they sound a bit alike but in reality they are entirely different kinds of band and people. They're appealing to different audiences (well not totally). It just depends on what you're looking for. My take on it is that they are both great bands but I think there is more of Coldplay's mater
What a GREAT release! Recently I bought the Radiohead album collection because I had heard so much about them and I wanted to check them out for myself. I also got the Coldplay collection to see what the fuss is all about too. Radiohead by far (to me) blows away CP simply because RH has evolved through the years. This is BY FAR my fave RH disc and it truly is great from end to end.
Street Spirit (Fade Out) is by far my favorite song on the album, if not my favorite Radiohead song ever, followed closely by Videotape, among others. The raw emotion Yorke displays is nearly enough to bring me to tears. Definitely not a particularly happy or upbeat album, but definitely very powerful and emotionally taxing.
This record was the soundtrack to my teens. This will always be my favorite. I love every song....however...High and Dry is my favorite.....just plain beautiful. Perfect.
I agree. "OK Computer" got more critical acclaim mainly due to its sheer technical ingenuity and lyrical brilliance. But the same way "Dark Side" wouldn't have happened without the underrated "Meddle," "OK" might not have happened had it not been for "The Bends." Thom sounds real, and the band wasn't pushing musical boundaries too far. Just enough.
So dam difficult to name a fav Radiohead album. If pressed to select only one album, this might be the one. A little bit of Pablo Honey trickled over to this follow up and I can listen to it from beginning to end. Sometimes I lose track of time and find myself lost and wandering when I listen to The Bends. My left brain totally kicks in and I lose myself.
just so this can be over with, radiohead is the best band in the world, and if you disagree then you are a retard, even if you dont like them you have to still agknowledge them as the best because thats what they are.
Everybody play nice. How funny, I needed a laugh anyways. Radiohead is awesome, so is Tull, Floyd, Crimsom, and so on. Lets all be thankful that we still have internet radio and the chance to discuss the music we all love. Enjoy the music we love everybody. IN RAINBOWS IS A GREAT LISTEN. Take Care yall.
How did this become a Tull-bashing forum? I love Jethro Tull, King Crimson AND Radiohead (and Rachmaninov too) just silly reading through these posts. I've recently come across a band called Mostly Bears. They're an american band whose sound is akin to Radiohead's without sounding overly derivative.
Don't feed the trolls. Personally, I'd say Radiohead is overrated, but they have some great songs, and Just is one of the best of them. You should also check out the music video. Usually I hate those, but that one has something more than the obligatory "look what a cool band we are" posturing.
crowned, its not lame to take band arguments personally. its human nature. music is one of the most unique human creations. its personal. to everyone. if you don't think it is, you must be a robot. a self-importa n t robot with an overgrown beard. by the way, i'm not even a big fan of radiohead.
Crowned and Conquering777-: If you "really could care less," then by all means please demonstrate that you "could" by making a nuisance of yourself somewhere else. Hey, thanks.
Oh, that's FUN! I'M taking this too personally but you're taking pot shots at my wife's stations! You're a living complicated contridiction , Crowned, and I'll miss you. Enjoy yourself always (you seem like a real laugh-riot) with the rest of your English-Major shut-ins over at the Tull site; you can spend all day throwing out the names of obscure novelists and other faux intellectual pursuits. I'll stop by when I need a good education on beard growth and self importance. I LOVE YOU!
You know what's REALLY lame? Going on an album's site and assuming people care about your inability to appreciate the record. Jethro Tull is terrible and that's why I stay away from the Tull page. How about we leave this site to people who appreciate Radiohead and 'The Bends' in particular? And no, Crowned--Radiohead is MUCH closer to 'Red' era Crimson than Jethro Tull and Complicated does NOT require focus--much the opposite, it requires a love of the smell of your own gas.
Jeb, leave it alone. You take it way too personally. It is an indication of a flaw in that solid and shining persona you boast. I'll leave you too your delusions of grandeur and importance. The Court of the Crimson King is music that Radiohead could not dream of creating. I'll actually leave it at that. It's like comparing Hunter S. Thompson to the Shakespeares of the world.
"Weird for the sake of being weird" is worse than "Complicated for the sake of being complicated" how exactly? If Radiohead said that bit about bar chords (which I doubt) then you and they are the only ones who care. Go, Crowned...and don't trip over your bloated sense of self satisfaction on the way out. The court of the crimson king awaits you! Dance, druid, dance!
"Wouldn't understand the substance and commentary involved with TULL?!?" That literally made me laugh out loud. When I grow up musically (which at 38, I've done) something tells me it's not going to lead to a guy in a nuclear jumpsuit blowing a flute like Peter Gabriel's idiot brother making social commentary that makes Ray Davies look like Oscar Wilde. Stick to your Rachmaninov--it's INCREDIBLY pretentious of you to mention, but at least makes you look smarter than Jethro Tull.
Here, you want to "expand" your musical tastes (i think it was said), try innovative and complex music. Go out on a limb and search for Premiata Forneria Marconi or Pain of Salvation or Rachmaninov. Expand my tastes. :)
yup, Tull is nothing compared to Radiohead. haha! When you grow up musically, you'll regret ever bashing the Greats like Tull. Second thought, you wouldn't understand the substance and commentary involved with Tull. Nevermind.
Did Crowned and Conquering777 actually recommend someone listen to JETHRO TULL?!? JETHRO FREAKIN' TULL?!?!? I don't care how you feel about Radiohead--love 'em or hate 'em, there's no excuse to turn Jethro Tull loose on someone. Jethro Tull would have to work hard and get much better just to be terrible. They are laughably awful and have a painful self-importance that makes Radiohead look like a group of comedians. You might as well say "Radiohead stink--the Monkees are much, much better."
