Jibaro Soy
About This Album
One of the band's touchstones includes some of the popular bandleader's finest writing; "Jíbaro Soy" places Puerto Rico's country men in the '70s salsa environment, while also using the national folk music known as décima; "Café Colao" is Leavitt's subliminal message on an interracial relationship. Trumpet player and longtime Leavitt's ally Luisito Maisonet perished in a 1972 car accident that almost claimed the bandleader's life, and this was the basis of one of the band's most solid hits: "La Cuna Blanca." "En Memoria de un Hermano" (with the uncredited help of Ismael Miranda) was another Maisonet eulogy in this enduring and highly requested recording that has remained one of their most in-demand efforts. ~ José A.
