About This Album
Oddly named post-alternative rock quartet Renee Heartfelt followed a string of singles with 2004's Magdalene EP, whose refined sound aesthetic in no way revealed the musicians' background in various Washington, D.C. hardcore bands. Rather, the band's surprisingly understated style sees memorable tracks like "Mary Magdalene" and "The Melodramatic (Pt. VI)" forging an alliance between carefully restrained power and barely avoided melodic overkill. At their very best, "La Seine," "Windowside" and "Picasso" also weave forlorn guitar harmonies over dense, slow-paced power chords for a vibe reminiscent of Quicksand or Soundgarden -- minus the metal. All told, an insidiously seductive release that bodes well for the band's future. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
