About This Album
Roseanna Vitro is a talented singer deserving of wider recognition, but this CD is a bit of a misfire. Although she is good voice throughout the date, the strange engineering of her vocals causes a slow fade which proves to be very distracting, especially on "Slow Hot Wind." Kenny Werner, an underappreciated pianist, unfortunately also incorporates bland synthesizer as well on too many tracks, reducing standards like "In a Sentimental Mood" to mush; worse is the presence of lightweight smooth jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum on a very dull poppish chart of "The Island" and Werner's disappointing "Gathering Stones." Whalum is clearly out of his league compared to the work of Joe Lovano and George Coleman on other tracks. Fans of Roseanna Vitro may get some enjoyment out of this CD, but anyone else would be advised to start with another one of her releases. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
