For her first major outing Little Voice, Sara Bareilles puts forth an intimate, emotionally charged album that sounds remarkably polished for a fledgling self-taught songwriter/performer. In fact, her voice even stands up to professionally trained pop divas like Christina Aguilera. Her only potential downfall is that she fits so perfectly in the adult contemporary female pianist mold that comparisons are inevitable -- Bareilles' vocal range is similar to Fiona Apple and she bears a striking physical resemblance to a merged composite of Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch. Despite the plethora of comparable looking and sounding artists, she still manages to stand out. The songs are sultry and generally upbeat, and delivered in a soulful manner with polished production and arrangement, but her X factor is in her ability to make it all sound unforced and very, very easy. Unquestionably, she's a natural with a huge voice and personality that shine through with spirited energy here. Perhaps the best and most original track is the ultra-peppy (think "Benny and the Jets") "Love on the Rocks" (not to be confused with the Neil Diamond number). With a warm wah-wah guitar and meandering Motown-esque harmonies, it makes for a perfect summertime love song. Undoubtedly her expertise is writing love songs like this, evident by song titles like "Love Song" and "One Sweet Love," but there are enough uniquely spun takes on the subject to make it interesting. In "Fairytale," children's stories are used as a metaphor for escapism and dealing with depression, and with the moody ballad "Gravity," falling in love is compared to getting caught in an inescapable gravitational pull. In the latter tearjerker of a tune, she shows off her chops with a song-stopping vocal crescendo, further proving that she has a style that's something special, even among all the stiff competition. ~ Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide
Gravity snd love song are my personal two favorites on this sound track, I love Sara Bareilles songs, and Gravity just moves me. She puts so much passion into her voice, it is amazing.
It's so interesting to see how different reviewers can be on similar artists. I just read a *horrible* review about One Cell In The Sea by A Fine Frenzy. While Bareilles' has a more natural sound, both were major label debuts and both artists were self-taught. This reviewer took that into much more consideration even though Bareilles is clearly more seasoned. I'm not a huge fan of either, but it's just interesting.
I am not really into a lot of pop music, but I heard her music and was fascinated. She is a very good writer and singer. I will be on the look out for her. People compare her to Nora Jones but Sara is a lot more soulful. hard to believe she has no formal training. She is naturally good.
I just bought this album and every time I hear Gravity it gives me chills. I love her voice, it's different to what is already out there and been sung. :)
amazing!!!! she is great i love her voice it's amazing!!!=) i love her songs when they are unplugged cause there sooo beautiful!!!and sound better then the recoding!!!
I really think Fairytale is better on her first album. It's too busy on this one. Gravity is also a lot better in its live version (which I downloaded off of limewire)lol. It's got a lot more personality and soul.
I think "Between the Lines" is one of the more insightful songs I've listened to in a long time...along with one of the best voices. Her vocal range is fabulous, but definitely not in the same league as Christina Aguilera! Which I believe makes her more appealing and easier to relate to than A-list superstars who don't perform for crowds smaller than 10,000 people. I look forward to hearing more from this sultry singer :)
I just heard her for the first time, on Little Voice (great song), and had a good laugh that the reviewer considers Christina Aquilera a contender in this woman's class.
Who cares about comparing her to other artists is a "potential downfall?" She is who she is.
These reviewers take themselves too seriously (including me).
castillobutterfly, don't you insult Sara Bereilles! I tend to be really defensive of anything I like a lot, and I gotta say, Sara Bereilles is #2 (alongside videogames xD)
