While Gish had placed the Smashing Pumpkins on the "most promising artist" list for many, troubles were threatening to break the band apart. Singer/guitarist/leader Billy Corgan was battling a severe case of writer's block and was in a deep state of depression brought on by a relationship in turmoil; drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was addicted to hard drugs; and bassist D'Arcy and guitarist James Iha severed their romantic relationship. The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction -- Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time. Instead of following Nirvana's punk rock route, Siamese Dream went in the opposite direction -- guitar solos galore, layered walls of sound courtesy of the album's producers (Butch Vig and Corgan), extended compositions that bordered on prog rock, plus often reflective and heartfelt lyrics. The four tracks that were selected as singles became alternative radio standards -- the anthems "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Rocket," plus the symphonic ballad "Disarm" -- but as a whole, Siamese Dream proved to be an incredibly consistent album. Such compositions as the red-hot rockers "Quiet" and "Geek U.S.A." were standouts, as were the epics "Hummer," "Soma," and "Silverfuck," plus the soothing sounds of "Mayonaise," "Spaceboy," and "Luna." After the difficult recording sessions, Corgan stated publicly that if Siamese Dream didn't achieve breakthrough success, he would end the band. He didn't have to worry for long -- the album debuted in the Billboard Top Ten and sold more than four million copies in three years. Siamese Dream stands alongside Nevermind and Superunknown as one of the decade's finest (and most influential) rock albums. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
this album was big and sonicly groundbreaking. when i listened to the first few tracks i knew it would be good, but hummer is when the album took off and didnt let up till the end. ive never listened to albums the same again
I bought this album on a hunch after hearing "Today" on the radio...which I didn't particularly care for. The hunch proved to be a huge win...I loved this album start to finish.
Amazing album, amazing songwriting. . . it's absolutely perfect. How anyone cannot like this album totally beyond me - maybe if you're a sociopath and have no feelings you might not 'get' it. It is a musical and lyrical masterpiece. Sure some of the lyrics aren't as great as when I was 13, but for the most part they shine and the emotion is still as strong as ever.
The spring/summer of '94; state champs in baseball, graduated, MANY parties w/ many 'experiences' (chemical & physical) and some of the best music of the '90's as the soundtrack! Nirvana, Soundgarden, Morphine, Rage A.T.M, Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Bjork, Petty's Wildflowers, Tool, Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Black F'N Crowes!, Blind Melon...I mean, DAMN, what a summer!! I consider myself lucky to have experineced those times! But life goes on....peace, love, rock'n'roll!!
This is for sure the archetypal Smashing Pumpkins album. With the first record, and previous ones, they would sometimes flirt with this sort of magic, but never duplicate it.
These guys established how i felt in middle school as my soon-to-be high school girlfriend left left, and i moved to another state, learned to smoke, and master debate, and watch wild chalk illustrations consume english teachers. Then college, job, wife, child. Hm. Point is i want to make a station that incorporates some of this with sonic youth. whatever, no point...thanks for stopping by. Beautiful album, with JUST the right amount of distortion and effects. Hearing the bass still gives me goosebumps. Favorite tracks: Cherub Rock, Soma, Mayonnaise, Geek USA.
I remember when this album first came out. I was shopping a Tower Music while they played it in its entirety throughout the store. I'd never heard anything like it and HAD to have it! It was one of those defining ah-HA moments in my musical journey when I decided to completely change my core gendre.. Best move I made in the 90's, musically speaking
that's what makes a great album, groundbreaking and sterling, near alone or unrivaled in its time, but timeless, and as meaningful as it was when it first arrived.
I sometimes forgt how great this album IS (not was). Everything about it is perfect. I always feel 12 again when I hear it. Great music in the late 80's/early 90's. Long live Alt-Rock
Just awesome... f**kin great!! ... i hadn't listened to "mayonaisse" for so many years -- how beautiful and brilliant and PERFECT.. and i'm right back in high school
