Psalm 1 - Elephant Daze
About This Album
Legally unable to utilize the Spear of Destiny name for a time, Kirk Brandon instead hatched Elephant Daze as his next project, then decamped to Philadelphia to put the plan into action. Recorded with guitarist John McNutt and drummer Art Smith, the nine demos here capture a rawness that few of Brandon's earlier recordings had entertained, but his voice remains as vividly vibrant as ever, while only the lack of production holds back songs like "Europa," "Revolver," and "Elephant Days" itself. Even more fascinating is an almost bitter recitation of "Shape of Things to Come," a song that Slade thrust into English earholes in the early 1970s, and which has been looking for a definitive revision ever since. This isn't it, but Brandon's rage is almost palpable, and it offers Elephant Daze a shape and direction that makes one wish he'd been able to see these songs through to their logical conclusion. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
