The Final Concert Recording
About This Album
The title of this two-CD set is not accurate since tenor saxophonist Stan Getz recorded People Time (a Verve set) six months after this one. However the release of this music is quite welcome, for Getz is heard near the end of his life still in prime form. He is joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Alex Blake, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington throughout the Munich concert. Five songs (four co-written by Getz, Eddie Del Barrio, and Herb Alpert) have Del Barrio and Frank Zotoli added on synthesizers; these slightly commercial numbers had recently been recorded for Getz's A&M record, Apasionado. The tenor sounds typically passionate on those weaker tracks, but the real reasons to acquire this two-fer are the nine quartet numbers. Getz is quite exuberant on such tunes as "On a Slow Boat to China," Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," "El Cajon," Kenny Barron's "Voyage," and "What Is This Thing Called Love." He takes one brilliant improvisation after another, making this set one to search for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
