A dozen songs of and about Nova Scotia, mostly about the sea and all but one written by Rogers. They successfully capture not only a people but their sense of time and beauty, with the Rogers baritone tastefully and effectively moving through the spaces and ages of his subject, and with traditional acoustic backing (guitar, violin, flute, etc.) ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
It's said that Stan stayed on the plane making sure everyone else could get out. This album was the first I heard that encapsulated what I like to call modern sea music. Listening to Stan lead me to Gordon Bok, who lead me to Archie Fisher. For that alone I'm grateful, not to mention the great music his brother has done. Fair winds, Stanley !
Through Steeleye Span and Grit Laskin, I was turned on to Rogers when his first album, Fogarty's Cove, came out and I fell in love with his style and voice on the ballads he sang. It was truly a sad day for the music world when he died on that plane in Ohio--not from any fire or crash, but from smoke inhalation, unable to get off the plane in time. Great music, a life too short on this planet. Dan
