Stone Temple Pilots were positively vilified once their 1992 debut, Core, started scaling the charts in 1993, pegged as fifth-rate Pearl Jam copyists. It is true that the worst moments of Core play like a parody of the Seattle scene -- titles like "Dead and Bloated" and "Crackerman" tell you that much, playing like really bad Alice in Chains parodies, and the entire record tends to sink into gormless post-grunge sludge. Furthermore, even if it rocks pretty hard, it's usually without much character, sounding like cut-rate grunge. To be fair, it's more that they share the same influences as their peers than being overt copycats, but it's still a little disheartening all the same. If that's all that Core was, it'd be as forgettable as Seven Mary Three, but there are the hits that propelled it up the charts, songs that have remarkably stood the test of time to be highlights of their era. "Sex Type Thing" may have a clumsy anti-rape lyric that comes across as misogynist, but it survives on its terrifically lunk-headed riff, while "Wicked Garden" is a surprisingly effective piece of revivalist acid rock. Then, there's the slow acoustic crawl of "Creep" that works as well as anything on AIC's Sap and, finally, "Plush," a majestic album rock revival more melodic and stylish than anything grunge produced outside of Nirvana itself. These four songs aren't enough to salvage a fairly pedestrian debut, but they do find STP to be nimble rock craftsmen when inspiration hits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
I READ KURT COBAINS HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN AND IT SAID THAT KURT SOLD THE SONG CREEP TO STP HAS NEBODY ELSE HEARD THAT..BY THE WAY TERRIBLE REVEIW SEEN THEM IN CINCY LAST SUMMER AND THEY ROCKED IT
"Wicked Garden", "No Memory", "Piece of Pie" and "Plush" are pieces of art indeed. sure half of this album seems like a joke, but maybe that's just what was called for by these guys, u know? i still have respect for them because there is uniqueness and passion in this music if u just hear it. sure u can tell quite clearly the kind of stuff they're rooted from, but hey, i mean it's grunge, what more do u expect? u might as well say that Radiohead were Smashing Pumpkins or Pixies "ripoffs"
Every review I have read by this Shephen guy has been negative. Maybe Pandora should have people who like music writing these reviews. I personally love STP! Still Remains is one of my favorite songs.
...Screaming through the guitar pick ups on dead and bloated to get that unique distorted sound was indeed genious... And not to mention STP is quite possibly the best and most energetic show I've ever seen... You're an idiot Stephen but at least you're in the right profession...
whoever wrote this review only cares about charts and pop culture. STP is the only of the original grunge bands thats still around. thats got to stand for something.
Agreed-wtf Stephen? I really hope you don't get paid to write such garbage. You most likely fantasize about Clay Aiken. Weiland is messed up but genius-many times they go together.
Simply put, this review couldn't be more erroneous. It doesn't even come close to accurately portraying what was an extremely solid debut album by one of the most talented bands of this era. Merely categorizing STP as a fifth-rate clone to bands like AIC and Pearl Jam (two terrific bands, by the way) is a narrow-minded assessment of a band that was every bit as good, and perhaps better than, the bands they were often compared to. They carved out a sound that was uniquely their own. STP rocks.
f you stephen thomas douchebag. you obviously dont recognize good music. dont care what you say. core is the reason i became an stp fan. proud of it too. and i even went to see them in concert this past summer. it was freakin sweet, especially cuz i was up front. so why dont you go lick an asss. bet ur just bitter cuz youre a failed musician or some crapola like that. stp rocks!!!!!!!
I don't know why STP gets no respect. No matter what you think about the band, they undeniably wrote some of the best songs of the 90's. If you look at their greatest hits album, almost every song STILL GETS MASSIVE RADIO PLAY almost 20 years after they were written. If that's not classic, I don't know what is. It's all about the music, and STP makes great, irresistable music.
That guy's on crack. I personally believe they are just as, maybe even better than pearl jam. They consistently write great songs. Pearl Jam were sort of one hit wonders.
What a terrible review... most of the reviews are pretty positive on this site.
For the Record: Where the River Goes is one of the best songs ever made.
Did this reviewer actually listen to this CD? Excluding "Wet My Bed", this Album is easily as good and original as any other released during the early '90s.
Some bands are more concerned about stage presence than just studio recordings. And I do not beleive Staley's voice was nearly as versitale as Weiland's.
Cause we all listen to music cause of the singers stage antics....
and its not cool to totally rip off another bands sound
PS: Staley of AIC, Cornell of soundgarden, and Vedder or PJ all have extreamly versatile voices
There is not doubt that STP is a great band but come on, they are completly unoriginal, the review is right in saying they are rip offs of alice in chains and pearl jam, but that doesnt mean there music sucks, it just isnt a unique sound at all. and what the f**k is wrong with Pearl Jam?
Who the hell is S. Erlewine and how millions of records has he written, produced, sold? STP is one if not the Greatest Rock Bands of all Time!!! Simply because the are a rock n roll band and nothing more. Check out the renunion tour if you can. They still got IT and then some!
Ill admit when this albulm first came out i was still stuck in the 80s but this is probabaly the second most Signiffigant Rock albulm of the 90s behind Alice in Chains Dirt "Plush" "Sex type Thing" "Dead and Bloated" "Creep" and "Wicked Garden are stand out tracks
