About This Album
Tempest features an international cast of characters: guitarist/mandolinist Lief Sorbye is a native of Norway, drummer Adolfo Lazo is from Cuba, and Robert Wullenjohn and Ian Butler are Californians. Three of the four are songwriters, and the album showcases tunes by all, and a couple of traditional tunes thrown into the bargain. Tempest has its own distinctive sound -- a blending of electric guitars with tin whistles and flutes, a combining of electric piano with mandolin, all frequently done to an Afro-Caribbean beat. The traditional tunes are not harmed by this approach -- Wullenjohn's musical setting of the traditional words to "Wild Rover" is particularly refreshing. This definitely is a recording you'll want in your Celtic folk-rock collection. ~ Mike Fleischer, Roundup Newsletter, All Music Guide
