About This Album
Following two well-received EPs (Gravity in 2003 and All Mine in 2004), and following a name change from its original moniker of Gravity, They Walk in Line signed with the Rock Ridge label in late 2004 and began work on its first full-length album, which came out in early 2005. The band's sometimes raggedy but generally very pop-smart sound is awash in 1980s influences, perhaps none quite so deep as Echo & the Bunnymen; at moments on "Heart Attack at 5 AM" and throughout the album-closing "All Mine," singer Michael Romero sounds like he's trying to channel Ian McCulloch. When the band gets punkier, as on the excellent "Slightly Fallen," a more unique sound emerges -- not necessarily a better one, but one that is clearly less dependent on stylistic antecedents and one that will probably form the core of They Walk in Line's mature sound. On the other hand, when they wimp out (as they do on the lyrically empty and musically slight "Sonic Tremble"), you start wishing they'd sound more like Echo & the Bunnymen again. Overall, not bad at all. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
