For their third release, Tool explore the progressive rock territory previously forged by such bands as King Crimson. However, Tool are conceptually innovative with every minute detail of their art, which sets them apart from most bands. Make no mistake, this isn't your father's rock record. Sonically, the band has never sounded tighter. Long exploratory passages are unleashed with amazing precision, detail, and clarity, which only complements the aggressive, abrasive shorter pieces on the album. There is no compromise from any member of the band, with each of them discovering the dynamics of his respective instrument and pushing the physical capabilities to the limit. Topics such as the philosophies of Bill Hicks (eloquently eulogized in the packaging), evolution and genetics, and false martyrdom will fly over the heads of casual listeners. But those listening closely will discover a special treat: a catalyst encouraging them to discover a world around them to which they otherwise might have been blind. If these aren't good enough reasons to listen to Ænima, then just trust the simple fact that Tool deliver the hard rock goods every time the band chooses to release something. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
Ditto, Hotwheelxx00!! I was blown away in my freshman year by the complexity of their writing, both lyrically and musically. No band can match their combination of passionate writing and gutwrenching attack. Danny Carey for President!!
i love tool! H. is my favorite track on this album, cuz i have died, and i will die, but it's alright, i don't mind, i don't miiiiiiiiiiind!!!!, still consider lateralus my favorite tool album though.
This album is f**k awesome from start to finish> ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS WERE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLY HIGH ON DRUGS>. I love it
(Not Fathers Band) funny my pop's brother (albeit younger bro) introduced me to TOOL, they are best heard esp this album on LSD or shrooms but more so LSD, but in my travels drugs have done more harm than good. Lost my younger bro to a first time mistake with H. didnt even know what it was he thought it was coke. how can you compare something that is so far out on its own it will stand the test of time? before the big bang everything was entangled; space is the illusion of being separated
I agree w/ you Mr. Mojo Risin; hands down this is the best Album of the 20th century. Tool managed to deliver music in an art form (something most bands and solo artist rarely do...or are incapable of doing). I've turned heavy rap, pop, r&b, classical, and emo music listeners onto Tool, and none of them regret it 'til this day. Tool is music for the "real" listener. If someone values instruments, thought provoking lyrics, passion and dedication, Tool is the absolute way to go.
wow! one of the critics finally got it right. This album is a masterpiece. Tool isn't about pseudo-meaningful lyrics to those who do a ltlle digging. Gotta love their earlier stuff ( a little more raw), but this one is even better then then the previous albums!
this is the finest album produced in the last 20 years. nothing matches the sheer power of the arrangement or the unrestrained raw emothion of the lyrics. it has the flow of dark side of the moon, the unmitigated hate of vulgar display of power, and the technical expertise of pysical graffiti all rolled into one nice little shitball. your boss will rightfully fear you should he discover you mumbling anything coherent from this album. without a doubt, this is tool's sgt. pepper.
