After an exhaustive five-year litigation battle between the band and their label management, Tool offer up the latest chapter in their musical self-discovery in Lateralus. Make no mistake, this is a prog rock record, reminiscent of King Crimson and Meddle-era Pink Floyd, with a hint of Rush mutated with Tool's signature sonic assault on the ears. Lateralus demands close listening from the first piece onward, as it becomes quickly apparent that this is not going to be an album one can listen to and accept at face value. Complex rhythm changes, haunting vocals, and an onslaught of changes in dynamics make this an album other so-called metal groups could learn from. While some compositions seem out of place, others fit together seamlessly, such as the 23-minute song cycle serving as the climax and resolution of the album. However, the album's most disturbing moment arrives at the end, with dissonant electronic noises placed randomly with a drum solo over a phone call to a talk show discussing the secrets behind Area 51, once again serving as a symbolic gesture from the band encouraging people not to take things at face value and to think for themselves. Overall, a solid, well-produced album from a band that never fails to deliver with each release. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
Picklesack needs to get back into the giant butthole they crawled out of. chad kroger's hair looks out of place without bein in the middle of two hairy a** cheeks
Wow, are you kidding, how can ANYONE with half an ear for music discuss Nickleback and Tool within the same breath ? I hate to admit it, I want to hate Nickleback but find myself humming along to their tunes. However you are talking two different categories of music here!
This is, without a doubt, Tool's gem. They manage to reveal a different side of themselves with every release. What does remain consistent is their authenticity, dedication, skill, endless creative output, and supreme awesomeness! This is the band everyone wishes they were in. I can't wait to hear what they will release next. Long live TOOL!
you gotta be s#$tting me! some one spoke about 'tool'and those pop, limp d*$# pseudo musicians "nickelback" in the same breath. not cool! maynard has pieces of wussy bands like "nd" lodged in his foreskin!
I agree with the Nickelback observations (similar in heaviness only), but don't get too worked up. Anyway... what can I say? This is a masterpiece. If you're someone who's new to prog rock, metal, hard rock, this is a good introduction to any of them. Get this at once, you won't regret it.
yah, my favorite tool album!!!!!!! ! i'll never forget the second time i took mushrooms and listen to this album in its entireity, it was a moment of awakening, a now i get it moment. i'll also give a vote for the title track as my favorite track on the album. puked a little in my mouth over the nickelback comparison.
Ridiculously good album. Ticks & Leeches may be the best "FU!" song ever produced.
I'd never encourage someone to take acid or shrooms (ahem). But, if you should find yourself under the influence of either, put this disc in and leave it be. Scary good.
Here's the questions you putzs have to ask yourselves... who has more hits? Who has more money? If any of you idiots answered "TOOL", you need to go get your heads pulled out of your rectums.
Nickelback is in no way simular to Tool. Tool rocks... Nickelback is rich.
To even compare this to finger elvel, Saliva, or :shudders: Nickelback, should be a hangable sentence.
Really goddamn good album by tool, not that it's suprising. Nickelback can't even attempt to play one song on this album, and if they could it would sound like BFMV doing a Beatles cover.
One of my favorite albums, if not my favorite album by Tool. One of the greatest bands ever. Oh and who ever said Nickelback even compares to tool is a f**king idiot. nickelback is a terrible band and is way to commercial. If you even want to consider nickelback a band.Going to see Tool in July will be one of the best shows I ever go to.
