About This Album
There's an "unplugged" feel to this fresh-sounding trio collaboration between guitarist Dave Stryker, master percussionist Manolo Badrena, and bassist Andy McKee. Stryker may be a "blue to the bone" organ trio veteran, but here he's got the lyrical Latin bug, sailing melodiously through eight originals, as well as two by Badrena and one by Steve Slagle, who guests on alto sax and flute. Stryker often overdubs acoustic and electric guitars to create lush harmonies and layered textures, but he doesn't over-sweeten things and his solos give the session plenty of bite. The title track sounds a bit like Weather Report's "Black Market," and Badrena's shout-vocal extends the reference, recalling "Rumba Mama" from Heavy Weather. For that matter, Stryker's open-tuned solo acoustic piece "Sunrise" is a pleasant throwback to '70s Larry Coryell. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide
