Blood Of The Medusa
About This Album
The members of Syracuse quintet Unholy parlay their considerable performing experience with numerous previous bands (Another Victim, Path of Resistance, Godbelow, etc.) into their 2007 debut, Blood of the Medusa, which they hope will provide the "soundtrack to your summer apocalypse." Well put, gentlemen, and whether the album fulfills this particular mission or not, its rage-driven brand of hardcore-founded heavy metal does confirm the group's appreciation for composing complete songs, rather than loosely linked patchworks of shouted diatribes, guitar riffs, and hyperactive drumming. In fact, the 12 tracks on hand are organized under three separate sections subtitled "dirt," "decay," and "demise"...very conceptual. And though they won't be dominating the airwaves of your local radio station anytime soon (well, OK, never), standouts like "A Whisper in Darkness," "Dreams in the Witching House," and the title track should deliver the goods for fans of Hatebreed or Earth Crisis (whose Karl Buechner guests on this album). So long as you don't expect Unholy to revolutionize the state of extreme music, which they certainly don't, then Blood of the Medusa has much to offer, even within the overly exploited musical parameters of metallic hardcore. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
