About This Album
Culled from producer and organist Lloyd Charmers' group the Hippy Boys, and later a launching pad for future Wailers, the Upsetters are primarily known as the house band heard on many of Lee Perry's circa-1970 sessions. The group featured the rhythm and brotherly duo of Aston and Carlton Barrett, as well as other Jamaican studio luminaries like organist/pianists Glen Adams and Winston Wright and bassist Boris Gardiner. Their sound was a stomping and idiosyncratic one, particularly appreciated by skinheads in Britain. This Trojan collection tells part of the story with a bevy of top instrumentals (sorry, no "Return of Django" here) and even a few vocal and DJ sides featuring the Termites and David Barker. Of course, Perry's unmistakable hand is evident throughout. A perfect mix for Perry completists and reggae archivists alike. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
