About This Album
By the time of its third album, Utopia had become an independent band, without the possessive "Todd Rundgren's" attached to it, and it was stripped down to a quartet of Rundgren, Roger Powell (keyboards), Kasim Sulton (bass), and John ("Willie") Wilcox (drums). Rundgren shared writing and lead vocal chores with his band mates. Ironically, the result sounded more like Rundgren's solo work than Utopia's first two albums, mixing Bernard Herrmann movie music with the show music approach of "Magic Dragon Theatre" and a typically Rundgrenesque ballad style on "Eternal Love," which was written by Powell and Sulton and sung by Sulton. All of that was on side one, however, with side two largely given over to "Singring and the Glass Guitar," the kind of extended, progressive rock composition that must have helped inspire This Is Spinal Tap. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
