About This Album
The Western Jazz Quartet is an impressive group of jazz educators from Western Michigan University who have toured the world spreading the message of jazz. For their three part "Mayan Suite," percussionist Jamey Haddad is added as a guest. "Jesse's Dilemma" opens with composer Trent Kynaston's haunting alto flute, switching to tenor sax for the up-tempo section, with each of the three movements segueing into each other. Pianist Steve Zegree's extended solo during the intense finale "The Warrior Temple" is another highlight. Trumpeter/flugelhornist Scott Cowan guests on the Latin-flavored "Nobody's But His Own" and adds his trumpet to the Kynaston's sassy blues "Harlem River Drive." One surprise is the thoughtful arrangement of George Harrison's ballad "Something," an understated but beautiful feature for Kynaston (on soprano sax) and Zegree, with bassist Tom Knific and drummer Tim Froncek providing soft backing. The Western Jazz Quartet has consistently been one of the most rewarding groups to appear on Sea Breeze Jazz and they are deserving of wider recognition. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
