Aimee Mann
Biography
During the '80s, Aimee Mann led the post-new wave pop group 'Til Tuesday. After releasing three albums with the group, she broke up the band and embarked on a solo career. Her first solo album, Whatever, was a more introspective, folk-tinged effort than 'Til Tuesday's albums, and received uniformly positive reviews upon its release in the summer of 1993. However, the album was only a small hit, spending only seven weeks on the American charts, where it peaked at 127. Nevertheless, Whatever rejuvenated her career -- after its release, critics were praising her songwriting, as were peers like Elvis Costello, Difford & Tilbrook, and Andy Partridge.
Early in 1995, Mann had a modest hit with "That's Just What You Are," a song included on the soundtrack to the television series Melrose Place. Following the success of the single, Mann was set to release her second solo album in the spring of 1995, but her record label, Imago, filed for bankruptcy before its release. She signed a contract with Reprise Records after Imago went under, but Imago prevented her from releasing any records. For most of 1995, Mann battled Imago in an attempt to free herself from the label, eventually winning her independence at the end of the year. After her dispute with Imago was settled, she signed with DGC Records. Mann's second album, I'm with Stupid, was released in England in the late fall of 1995 and in January of 1996 in America. Again, it was greeted with positive reviews yet weak sales.
Mann's career got a kick-start in early 2000, however, when she released her soundtrack for the critically acclaimed film Magnolia; the song "Save Me" was later nominated for an Academy Award. Originally available only at live dates, the solo Bachelor No. 2 received national release in the spring. In the summer of 2002, Mann returned to the forefront with the self-released Lost in Space. Late 2004 saw the release of Live at St. Ann's Warehouse, a CD/DVD package recorded during her summer tour. It was followed in 2006 by the critically acclaimed Forgotten Arm, a concept album built around the return from Vietnam of a drug-addicted boxer. Mann released a collection of Christmas songs called One More Drifter in the Snow in 2006. @#%&! Smilers followed in 2008. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

I'm With Stupid
1995
Aimee's songs are intensely personal, and often require more attentive listening. That's probably why you don't hear them on the radio. People become attached to them over time. Go to a show and watch the crowd request her songs. She writes about relationship s and struggles that people have with life. I've been listening for years now. Never a disappointme n t . Always interesting and beautiful. I'm With Stupid is a classic.

I've listen to Aimee since the first album with "Til Tuesday... and was hooked from that moment on. Seen her many, many times live and it is such perfection that it leaves you simply wanting more.
Only in America could a person of such talent, insight and ability to express it through music could be so over looked...... USA - A cultural wasteland. |

Wise Up is an incredibly powerful song! being a huge fan of the film Magnolia, it really holds a special place in my heart. there are few songs that completely "make" a scene, and Wise Up tugs at the heart-string s like no other. elegant and simultaneous l y brutal, Aimee is in a class of her own.

Aimee Mann is positively the most overlooked artist I've heard. I'd agree that she's one of the greatest songwriters ever, and given her talent, her realness, and her attitude, I consider it a terrible injustice that I've never heard any of her work on FM radio. I can't name one other artist who can write about things like heroin addiction and toss in appropriate f-bombs while exhibiting such wit and intelligence , and while doing all of it so beautifully.

I was turned onto Amiee Mann via the "I Am Sam" Soundtrack. Excellent album if you don't have it or haven't heard it. I like her stuff.

I liked it but not sure if I'd ever want to hear it again. Not sure what frame of mind I would need to be in to listen to it.

A real favorite. Hope to see her play live sometime. Who was that she sang Static on the Radio with before the forgotten arm? It was a good song, but there must have been complexities , to say the least. Glad she's at it full force again. Bah humbug to record labels, given her troubles. She sounds like Sarah Harmer. Great, great, and more great! We own the forgotten arm, and like it a lot!

Saw her live in portland, maine. A small venue. A terrific show. An honest performance. Still one of my favorites.

I met Aimee Mann at a radio station I used to work at in the '80s when she was with Til Tuesday. Nice to share she was genuine person back then, so was her band. I was into her music then, but it wasn't until NPR did an incredible piece on I'm with Stupid that I feel helped launch her big time in the annals of rock. Now, I'd love to see a collaboratio n with her husband, M. Penn as the next project.

I fell in love with Aimee Mann's music when Magnolia came out - saw a documentary about how PT Anderson used her music to write storylines for Magnolia & then the movie sparked her to write new songs - the idea of them influencing each other was awesome to me...since then, I'm totally hooked and have all her albums - her lyrics and vocal musicality are probably the best I've ever heard.

Just saw her at Bonnaroo where she was killer, despite the oppressive heat. Love her music.

Amiee Mann is a wildly talented musican, songwriter, and performer. Her mark on music has definetly changed the face of contempory "rock" music, her music trully rocks, thanks Amiee you are amazing.

I love Aimee Mann. It all started with Till Tuesday and I was hooked! She' got an amazing voice and personality that goes with it. She seems so natural. I'm glad she decided to go solo and do her own music!!!!

Aimee Mann is one of those rare artists who's just as good, if not better, live as she is in studio production.. . Her voice truly is a musical instrument in its own right. An AMAZING one at that. I thought 'Til Tuesday was a good band, all and all, but I'm so glad Aimee Mann went on to become such an established solo artist. She's everything that's genuine and worthwhile about music today.

This is the first time I've heard this girl - what a nice tone to her voice - I really am intrigued. Everyone has such nice things to say about her. Perhaps I'll go and buy one of her records - see how I like the rest of her stuff. Very Very nice so far...

I started out with "Amateur" and I've been listening ever since. Aimee's got a voice that reminds me of Karen Carpenter at times. I believe that the more you listen to her eclectic and intricate creations the more you find to love. She is an artist to be appreciated.
|
||
What can one say, really?
Aimee is authentic. For me, that is the primary criterion for an artist in any medium. For me, that puts her in league with the likes of sculptors Giacommeti and Duchamp; writers Richard Powers and Tobias Wolff; painters Joan Miro and Clyfford Still; composers Gustav Mahler and Brian Eno. But, hey, that's just me. |

Her voice, melodromatic harmonies, are great. No one else even compares or comes close to her voioce and style.
|

Initially, I really loved Lost in Space and Bachelor No. 2. However, now that I have listened to The Forgotten Arm many times, it has become my favorite. The concept of the album makes each piece of the story so much richer and more nuanced. Check her out in concert too--she is charming and fun to watch!
|
||
I went to her Christmas show in 2006 and it was amazing. She is a great entertainer.
|
||
my favourite singer/songw r i t e r of the past three years... Lost In Space should be a part of most peoples collection.
