Taylor Swift
Biography
Taylor Swift became one of country-pop's brightest (and youngest) faces in 2006, when the 16-year-old vocalist released her first album. Although new to the American public, Swift had been performing since early childhood, taking inspiration and encouragement from her opera-singing grandmother. She sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" before a Philadelphia 76ers game at the age of 11; the following year, she began practicing her guitar skills for several hours each day, only stopping when her fingers began to bleed. Swift's parents realized their child's dedication and began making regular visits to Nashville, TN, where Swift would perform casually and meet with songwriters in the area. The family then decided to move from their native Pennsylvania to an outlying Nashville suburb, which accelerated Swift's career.
While performing at the intimate Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Swift caught the eye of music industry veteran Scott Borchetta, who signed her to his newly formed label. Swift joined the roster at Big Machine Records and released her debut single, "Tim McGraw," in August 2006. The song drew upon her experience as a lovelorn high-school student, a theme that Swift revisited throughout her self-titled debut album. Released in late 2008, Taylor Swift catapulted the young songwriter to stardom, spawning a handful of hits (five consecutive Top Ten singles, a new record for a female solo artist) while earning multi-platinum sales. Swift also received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, an award she ultimately lost to Amy Winehouse. Two subsequent EPs -- Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection and Beautiful Eyes -- helped maintain Swift's popularity while whetting public demand for her sophomore release, Fearless, which arrived in November 2008. ~ Andrew Leahey & Megan Frye, All Music Guide
And somehow this has turned into a discussion about love...
I'm a tomboy, I'm not really sure what the guys at school think about hypothetical l y asking me out, considering I'm really good friends with the majority. At least I didn't fall helplessly in love with a stalker vampire... |
That's true Fangirl. I love my family as well but there are just things I blatantly don't like about them sometimes. Now I believe you can love a person for who they are, and you should, but you can't possibly like every little thing about them. Each person has their own eccentriciti e s , and sometimes those eccentriciti e s clash with someone else's. It's the things that make so different from one another and attract us to our bf or gf in the first place. I don't mean to get too pyschologica l . ;)
here's my question: does anyone believe in "the one"? the perfect person who just loves everything about you no matter what and does anything for you? I think if that's true, life would just be plain boring. I mean, as much as I love my family, there are things about them I don't like! and I know they can't tolerate everything about me! :/
I'm similar, Writer! I'm 15 and had never fallen in love. ^_^' the last guy friend I had was back in 2nd grade. kinda pathetic, huh? maybe I'm just not open-hearted enough, I dunno. *shrug* my time will come I guess...
Thanks K.K. :-) You're right, why should we care what society thinks? No one should. We would all be better off that's for sure!
Haha, Writer, I think it's just fine that you've never had a boyfriend. After all, who cares what society thinks? ;)
Again I habitually ran out of room. Ha ha
But what I was going to say was, whenever I think about stuff like that I just think about Reba's song 'Somebody'. Very inspirationa l song that can apply to all of us, whether we're old young, never loved before, or look back and see a trail littered with bloodied pieces of our broken heart. Now Reba knows how to sing about heartbreak! :-) |
I haven't loved and lost the one I thought was the one. Why do people always assume that? That everyone's suffered through a break-up at some point in their life? Perhaps I'm biased because I've never had a boyfriend. If I ever find a guy who loves the same things I do I will be amazed, because I have yet to find ANYONE who loves the things I do. Not that I'm special or anything, but I don't exactly have your run of the mill passions and interests. ;-)
ok, I'm not sure if HIM strays too far off from mainstream, but yes, they keep their music varied. :)
but in the end, we find a song that speaks so dearly to us, we keep it dear to us. that's what i think music is for (when you care about the lyrical context, of course). |
she if lovely. Her heartache is so familiar to all of us. We have all loved and lost the one we thought was the one. Someday may we will be luckly enough to meet someone one who the loves
the same things we do.... |
Nothing wrong with opinion Fangirl. You are speaking a blatant truth though. Singing about love can only work for any artist if they keep it VARIED and DIFFERENT from the mainstream. Taylor Swift...hasn ' t gotten this through her head yet. Perhaps she never will.
in my biased opinion, the best band that can make great love songs is HIM! all of their songs are about love, but it's not the same old thing over and over again! (only opinion, and I'm not forcing anyone to take it as gospel truth).
I agree Fangirl. Writing about love is what most artists do, it's a staple that all musicians go back to again and again because it's so universal and all of us can relate in some sense or another. Nothing wrong with that! :-)
I'm glad I inspired you to write alot! My writing is rubbing off on people. I love it! :-) And you're right, Taylor does have a knack for writing. I think she just has to branch out beyond the high school love stuff. But love is such a varied subject, like you mentined. |
... some can be about unrequited emotions, obsession, "I'm glad this person is in my life", "sometimes you put me though hell, but I still love you", and so on and so forth. again, I can't judge because I only heard two of her songs (one of which I kinda like).
wow, Writer, you inspired me to write a lot too! lol ^_^' |
my problem with her voice is that hers is not very unique, like it's been done millions of times before. I'm starting to prefer male singers because I can tell them apart MOST OF THE TIME. onto lyrics: at least she works a little bit with them, unlike Miley who needs someone else to do the job for her. it's fine to write about a theme over and over again, but it just has to be done well in a way that each time it's slightly different. ex: it's fine to write lyrics about love...
And because as coondini knows all too well, I can be very verbose and invariably run out of room, but I have to say more! :-) Taylor is in NO WAY a TRUE ARTIST. That's just an oximoron right there. It's liking look at the sky and calling it green. Taylor is what she is. And sadly, she isn't much. Taylor is simply a product of the media, her parent's deep pockets and today's youth that feed and live off of uncreative, unoriginal and untalented music. She's another product off the asembly line. :)
I'm not so sure you should be so quick to respect Taylor for writing her own lyrics. I mean, have you listened to them lately? They're kind of montonous, mundane and trite. Nothing significantl y spectaular there last time I looked. And alot of her songs have the insignia "co-written" which basically means she had people help her write it to come up with slightly more creative and expansive ideas than what Taylor's limited, one-demensio n a l mind can muster.
Sigh. Here's the thing. She carries herself remarkably well. I do admire that. However, she is not a very good singer- she tries to do what she can't, and her voice is whiny. Although she OCDs over boys in her songs, I respect the fact that she writes her own lyrics. True artists, at least, do that much.
Hey anytime Fangirl...yo u know you're liked and well received around here (well except maybe for the various bots, but who cares about them anyway right? lol). I look forward to crusading more with you!
And yeah Willis, I get what you mean...thoug h pop music with any kind of country influences (which is as close as Taylor gets to country) is still pop music, and should be categorized exclusively in the pop music category. Same with pop-rock, or any other kind of poppy sounding music. |
Twilight is the Cinderella of vampire literature. fine for little kids (minus Breaking Dawn's... the BIRTH), but others? not too much. better vampire stuff that is modern is the Vampire Academy series and the Moonlight tv show.
ANYWAY. thanks, coondini, I'll enjoy reading your efforts! *eats ice cream* |
Coondini, as far as country-pop, you can have pop with some country influences, like Taylor Swift, even though she sucks, and vice versa. Pop music these days is usually terrible, however
I've read the first book, fell asleep reading the second one and never pivked it up again. Unfortunatel y , my friends have told me the story over and over, so I know what it's about. I also saw the movie with my friend, but I hated it so much....
Twilight is overrated.. |
Ug...Twiligh t makes me shudder. My parents watched to movie just to see what all the raving was about, and they could not honestly see why people were so crazy over it. They said it was really stupid. I have not seen the movie or read any of the books, and I don't plan to anytime soon either.
Haha, well Fangirl, I'm glad you thought of us enough to come check on our progress over here. I know you've done a hell of a job on the Miley/Jonas/ D e m i b o t s and their correspondin g pages. So you can take a back seat to here if you want to, and interject whenever you feel like it. If you wish :)
Writer and coondini are at it pretty good here... (Twilight = OVERRATED SERIES THAT SHOULD NOT BE COMPARED WITH HARRY POTTER! >.<) I'm not going to critique here because, sadly, country (even if this isn't) is not my cup of tea.
I like one Taylor Swift song but that's it. *sits back and watches* |
And I don't really believe in that "country-pop " stuff anyway. I think it's either country or pop, but not both. And Taylor is definitely pure pop. There's no "country" to be found in any of her music. After all, have you ever heard of a country singer from Pennsylvania ? Just something to think about...
You guys are right in one aspect...Tay l o r Swift appeals to people who don't like the traditional sound of "pure country" but instead lean towards what someone on Pandora had dubbed "poptry". Or in other words, country-pop. That's why she's hit it so big, because there's a lot of people out there that fall head over heels in love with that country-pop stuff. Not me. :-) I'll stick to my 90's country music and traditional sound.
Yeah I'm not a super big country fan, but i do really like her major hits. and she is just such a beautiful girl! I'm a sucker for surly blond hair. all blond people should do that. it has so much more character when it's curly. :)
a lot of people who arent really country/pop fans seem to like her music. carefull im sure someone will come on here and say how dumb or crazy you are for liking taylor swift but its ok they have a right to there opinion as do we.
yeah im really a vimpire haha, thats funny. actually yesterday i accidentally killed a bat. it was in the door way and i smashed it with the door. oops. anyways did you even look at the video i mentioned below? just wondering if we at least agree on that.
Every time Love Story plays on the radio it reminds me of my college roomie. She had it set as her ringtone cuz she is a freakin' cutie. She's the one that got me into Taylor Swift's music. Not really a country/coun t r y - p o p fan, but I guess she'll be the one exception to my tastes. ^^
Hopefully she was being scarsatic. Who's to know? Anyway, yeah, the REAL twilight - the time of day that is - is very beautiful and one of my favorites. In one of my recent stories I described it as the space of time between the sharp inhale of the day and the cool, slow exhale of nightfall.
Whenever I write I love to use metaphors. Back to the absurd movie. Now there's a sequel 'New Moon' coming out. Can't believe it. I would love to see what the tweenie girls see in those movies. |
I think she was just being sarcastic... w e l l I hope so anyway. But yeah...this whole vampire nonsense is just it, nonsense. I don't get why so many tweenie girls are hooked on this Twilight crap. The only kind of twilight I want to see is in the sky when I'm getting ready to go out on a Friday night.
Okay...you'r e a vampire? Not sure how to responde to THAT one. You just said you weren't a big vampire person, now you're claiming you're one of them? Do you realize how contradictor y that is? What the hell is it with bloody vampires taking over the world? OMG! I can't stand it! I recently wrote a blog on how vampires are romanticized in today's society and I think it's bulls**t! They're even taking over my favorite section in my favorite bookstore. NOT cool! I'll take my mystery genres anyday.

earlier i was talking to someone about live performances compared to radio edit. heres a guy that really makes the most of his live performances . amazing artist in my opinion. http://www.y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ? v = J k 1 n w 4 U o x i g
