AFI
Biography
Hardcore punk revivalists AFI (A Fire Inside) originally formed in 1991 when their members -- vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vick, and drummer Adam Carson -- were attending high school in Ukiah, CA. Vick was replaced by Geoff Kresge after several months, and the band played a few local gigs and released a split 7" titled Dork with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change (a band that incidentally included future AFI member Jade Puget). An EP titled Behind the Times was released as well. The bandmembers then split up to attend different colleges, with Kresge temporarily moving to New Jersey to join Blanks 77, and all assumed East Bay's AFI was defunct. However, the band reconvened during a holiday break from school to play a one-off reunion show, and audience response was so positive that the bandmembers decided to quit school and concentrate on music full-time.
A couple of singles preceded a record deal with the Nitro label, which issued the band's second album, Very Proud of Ya, in 1996. Two LPs followed in 1997 -- a re-release of their 1995 debut, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, and Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes -- and personnel shifts ensued; Kresge was the first to leave, being replaced by Hunter Burgan, and Stopholese departed in favor of ex-Redemption 87 guitarist Jade Puget, who then shared songwriting duties with Havok. The new lineup recorded an EP titled A Fire Inside in 1998, and issued a noticeably more mature full-length in 1999, Black Sails in the Sunset. 1999 also saw the release of the All Hallow's EP before The Art of Drowning followed a year later. Though already owning a fiercely loyal core base of fans, the latter album saw the band's music being received by an even larger audience, due in part to the moderate success of the single "Days of the Phoenix."
In the new millennium, AFI hooked up with Jerry Finn and Garbage's Butch Vig for some recording. The end result was the ambitious Sing the Sorrow, released in March 2003, their major-label debut for DreamWorks that showcased the band's significant growth from their early hardcore days. The record also marked AFI's crossover into the mainstream as their fan base considerably grew, national news publications praised them, and several singles found airplay on MTV. Working again with producer Jerry Finn (blink-182, Green Day), the band's next record was their most labor-intensive to date, resulting from two years of detailed songwriting. Decemberunderground, album number seven, surfaced on June 6, 2006, on Interscope. The album was an instant success, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts. AFI kept the momentum going on the road nationwide that summer, followed by a string of overseas dates in October. While on tour, Havok and Puget dedicated their spare time to a side project that would become Blaqk Audio, which they debuted in early 2007. AFI went on to release I Heard a Voice: Live from Long Beach Arena later that same year. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

old AFI.... ;( I know people change but waiting for 3 years for decemberunde r g r o u n d was not worth it. Just put in the art of drowning (or anything before STS) and hear the beauty..... F**king new "emo" kids have to kill everyhting good.

If you think this is one of the greatest bands in the world then there's a Jimmy Buffet cd at a truck stop somewhere just waiting for you. Here ya go..."While we're really proud of our history and accomplishme n t s we feel our career is really just getting started and feel slightly embarrassed by anything that hints at retrospect. There's plenty of time for that later when we're old. We'd rather move forward...." That was the post by AFI on their official message board in October 2004.

Hey how do your kids feel about paying 2.50 for bottled water and overpriced corporate created merchandise? I just loved being searched and having my spiked collars, bracelets and chains removed and thrown away just so the vendors inside can sell the same s**t right back to me. That's exactly what I love to do when I go to punk shows.
So essentially Davey is saying "Let's pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, and let's all forget about our roots in "skate-punk" and all the Danzig feltching over the last few years. Let's just focus on what we do now and the thousands of easily duped new wave emo-tards we've attracted." Either way, you've gotta kiss the ring of the don baby, and Danzig's hands are oh so dirty I'm sure.
I'm forty nine years old and Afi is one of the Greatest if not greatest Band that I have ever heard.my Kids seen them at the warp tour years ago and invited me,I did not go and wished I had.
Rise Against isn't a punk band either. They're like an indie power-pop band with a sociopolitic a l message(some t i m e s ) . Either way, this isn't about Rise Against and how I've enjoyed nothing they've created. This is about AFI and how they sound like a toilet with high pitched squeeky pipes.
Rise Against is way better than GAYFI Ive heard a lot GAYFI's music they suck they sound to much like MCR and their songs are over played on the radio they should stop trying to be punk and just be an emo band.
But that white strip Davey has in his "faux-devill o c k " does sort of differentiat e between him and the queen of pop.
Ahem...I don't think I have to go through the resume of underground bands I have been involved with in the past to impress little kids who cut their baby teeth on Black Sails in the Sunset. I'm also sure that the crust and gutter punx I lived with on the streets of asluT for three years would also agree that jealousy over someone who's supposed to be so deep and introspectiv e but has been compared to being the "punk rock Madonna" is just silly and not worth the time.
Silly little people being all negative for someone they are really jealous about. If you were so talented we'd at least know who you might be, or a band you might be apart of. But then again you sound pretty hard core and would want to be so underground that you would never make it out of your little hick town. Talk about poseurs!
haha, bob, Davey is just a plain old homosexual. You have a point, but that doesn't mean their new stuff isn't really good. I like both sides of sing the sorrow for different reasons, and blaqk audio isn't that bad either.
yeah i agree with jammaros. i like afi's old stuff and their newer stuff just the same, although that seems to be a crime these days. :-/
Here would be a fun little test, I'm sure if I met Davey Havok and he was eating lunch, I could go up to him, look him dead in the eye, take his lunch, eat it in front of him, use his woman-like hair brush to pick the food particles from my teeth, spit the unchewed particles in his face, and he'd have to sit there and take it because what's he really going to do? Shed a tear for his lost lunch and write about it in his diary? Nothing punk about that asswipe anymore...ef f i n g emosexuals.
Happy to oblige with filling your mopey existance with "whimsy". However there's nothing low about my self esteem darling. I just think Davey Havok and his oh so womanly voice and appearance now is only akin to how womanly and lame most of his fans are now.
generally, AFI gets less abuse than MCR. People who don't like it probably have only have heard Decemberunde r g r o u n d . I can understand that... that album sounds pretty emo. (not that I have a problem with emo)
on a side note, the internet is full of idiots. Ever looked at youtube comments? It's best not to feed the trolls. |
it's so funny when people's self esteem is so low that they have to go around bashing other people's opinions like somebody is actually going to take it to heart.
thanks bob for giving me something to laugh about today |
It's nice to see that Davey has finally pulled himself out of Glenn Danzig's a**hole for inspiration and is coming into his own style...it's just too bad that style sucks. But they do well to fit in with crappy bands like My Gynecologica l Romance and Aiden. Blagck Audio sucks cow bowels, and most of AFU's other music is pretty hackneyed as well, but if you like them than I guess it's cool...poser s . . . l o l
Ya, this dude <"benasuckin " > , suckin what? AFI shreds! know what your talking about befor your you spout off, dumbass. AFI has been influential with there music for years. Join the revolution! Up the Irons!! Eddie LIves....
AFI(annoying fagit idiots) is like a gay version of rise against or punk mixed with My chemical romance and they should change their name to gayfi(gay f*g idiots or gay fire inside they suck.
Oh my f**kin god!! A.F.I. is sOoOo cool. They're one of my favorite bands ever!!
seriously... if "Miss Murder" is your favorite song from AFI, you should listen to an album besides Decemberunde r g r o u n d . It's alrite... and it's what made me get more AFI and thus, they became my favorite band, but compared to Black Sails and Art of Drowning, it's not very good.
whatever you said about MCR, Katherine, they used to be my favorite, but The Black Parade was terrible compared to their first album. AFI is alot better. |
AFI is one of my favorite bands
they f**king rock |
afi have set the bar to jump over is not going to happen impossable ion sort tearms they are almost the beat mcr have them beat
i am soo sad that they are gone, happiness may always fade away, but some memories last 4ever
Some of their songs are pretty good...Like "Love Like Winter" and "Miss Murder"...
Its funny that people call them "Posers" considering the fact that they have been in the "punk music" scene since 1995. 13 years and they are the posers??? YEAH RIGHT LOSERS
I personally love AFI!!! My favorite CD is "Shut your mouth and open your eyes". IF you're a fan, it's a must have
One of my absolute favorite songs is Silver and Cold; I don't know why, but it's catchy. Really good music.
