Alex Parks
Biography
Winner of the BBC talent contest Fame Academy in 2003, Alex Parks was hailed as one of reality TV's most interesting and original performers. Born in 1984 in Mount Hawke, Cornwall, Parks started songwriting at the age of 13. While studying theatrical and performing arts at college, she learned to play the guitar and performed in local band One Trick Pony, where she was introduced to the music of Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell. Parks initially planned to move to Amsterdam to learn the art of clowning, but her career path changed dramatically when her father submitted an application for the second season of Fame Academy. Among 12,000 hopefuls, she became the youngest contestant chosen to appear on the show, which combined Big Brother-style fly-on-the-wall footage with live studio performances from undiscovered artists. While on the show, she earned rave reviews from the judges for her husky-voiced, emotional renditions of songs by the likes of Christina Aguilera, John Lennon, and Coldplay, and soon built up a loyal fan base. After performing the co-written "Maybe That's What It Takes" in the finals, she beat fellow contestant Alistair Griffin to win a record contract with Polydor and keys to a flat in Notting Hill.
Recorded in a matter of weeks, her debut album, Introduction, featuring several of the cover versions she performed on the show as well as new material, was released in December, where it charted at number five and went on to sell over half a million copies. After a second single, "Cry," Parks spent the next year working on her follow-up with the likes of Peter-John Vetesse and Judie Tzuke. The album's eventual release was delayed amidst reports that Polydor was unhappy with the lack of potential singles. (It was later revealed that Parks had turned down "Shiver," which went on to be a huge hit for Natalie Imbruglia.) Despite criticism from fans, lead single "Looking for Water" was released as a download-only single at the end of 2005, and weeks later the album Honesty charted at a disappointing number 24. After the title track second single failed to reach the Top 40, Parks announced she has parted company with her record label. Deciding to take a hiatus from the music industry, she spent the next year traveling around Australia, but in 2007 she revealed that she would be starting work on her third album. ~ Jon O'Brien, All Music Guide

She has a lovely voice, but I haven't heard anything yet that is HER music/lyrics and not a cover song.

meaning? Her other path suggested you have chosen, for it is your love. She'll do well having never met you. I enjoy her work.
Love that her other path in life was to be a clown. Also love the person who said her face looks like mine -- next sentence, she's very pretty. lol. I don't know this lady or her cover of Yellow, but anybody have any opinions on if it is better than Jem's cover...?
This is one of the best artist I've found recently. Looking forward to another album soon!
I still like Dolores Mary O'Riordin too, but Alex is rockin too. She would be (maybe she is) hugely popular down here in Miami.
thumbs down for me. you'd think if she started write at 13 she'd be a lot better, being that was 11 years ago
okay, so her voice is nice, but I just heard dolores sing zombie, and yeah, still like o'riordan more. srry.
dang, i love her voice. i tghink i like it more than o'riordan's voice,a nd I'ma dolores o'riordan FREAK!!!
her voice is beautiful and soothing...h o p e the record companies don't polish her up too much...I love the rawness of her natural voice...her background story is lovely as well...not sure why she is in new age pop...she seems much more versatile than that...bookm a r k e d for purchase
Her face kinda looks like mine... your right, feministacti v i s t , she is very pretty and she also has an amazing voice. How many records has she made?
I like her voice.. it is not perfect or entirely original..
But it is different and her cover of Yellow by Coldplay is decent. I like her |
I like it--don't know why people have to get completely psycho about not liking it--if you don't, then don't listen to it, but using vulgar and abusive language is very childish.
rip-off cover of mad world. exact duplicate of Gary Jules' cover. Nothing original to it at all. If you're going to do a cover of a song, make it different than the last guy that covered it.
lol, "me", you're a p**sy. You marked your profile private. P**sy.
What, do you know Alex personally? Cause the level of hate you have for her is funny. You sound butthurt. Oh, I know! You must have been the runner-up in BBC's talent contest! Sucks to be you, b**ch. |
It's crazy to hear this covered so many years after it's original release by Tears for Fears. She does an amazing job with it. Roland and Curt would be flattered.
I think she's pretty decent, I like her song Mad World! People aren't idiots just because they like a certain artist, though. I mean, the music I listen to has usually nothing to do with me, so . . .
...and all this ugliness coming from somebody who likes Train? Drops of Jupiter? Seriously? Listen, if you don't like an artist, how about telling us why without the personal attacks?
I think this young woman has a pleasant voice that's nice to listen to in the background. Not sure if I think she's fabulous, but who says she has to be? It's all about passing the time.... |
amazing voice! plunty of nice songs to lean back on and enjoy ;) the mad world by gary jules was nicely done! *kiss*!
