Alexander O'Neal
Biography
This Minneapolis soul man cut his teeth in the Time but was bounced (for looking "too black") before they signed with Warner Brothers. His tough, ballsy voice has the same grain and range as Otis Redding's. Like that master, Alexander O'Neal is comfortable with pumping dancefloor burners and slinky couch-cuddlers. He's certainly the best singer Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have ever produced, and the strength of his material and his robust voice can be heard on releases including 1986's Hearsay, 1991's All True Man, and 1997's Lovers Again. He relocated to Britain, where his efforts had always been better received, and began to set up permanent shop there. His first British-only release, 2002's Saga of a Married Man, showed him developing into a smoother and more mature singer compared to his previous output. ~ John Floyd, All Music Guide

Alex was the man back in the day..... Hearsay was good, but the first one Alexander O'neal was his best... Jam and Lewis was on a roll from 85 til about 2005.... Long live the MPLS sound.... Prince is the godfather of the MPLS move.......

One of the greatest singers around. The truth of the matter is that Alex had the women screaming his name more than Morris' name (morris day. To bad he had to go to Europe to get more noteriety and to put out more music.

i remember when i first heard this song. I was living in Chicago at the time and music from tha Minneapolis area (ie. The Time, Prince, Maserati, ect...) was all i heard. Now, living back in VA, I'm still loving all his music.

I Love Alexander O'Neal, and no he's not "too Black" looking. He is extremely handsome, and "The Time" missed out big time by bouncing him for that. I wish him all the luck in Great Britain!

I love Morris, but sounds like he was afraid O'Neal would steal the spotlight. I love em both, but hands down Alex has a better voice.

now i know that morris day is really fair skinned BUT what about jerome benton, terry lewis and jellybean johnson? none of those brothas would be considered "high yella" either. i heard that alexander had a bit of a drug problem and that's why he didn't make the final cut of the time, but who knows?... all of that, whether its the colorism thing or the drug rumors, are all speculation.

i first heard of Alexander when he did a duet with Cherrelle called Saurday love and i knew then he would be a star. his Christmas album is off the chart, if get a chance to listen to it.
