Amel Larrieux
Biography
R&B singer-songwriter Amel Larrieux grew up in New York's Greenwich Village; her mother, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, was a dance critic and professor, and she was raised in an artistic environment. She formed Groove Theory, a duo with former Mantronix member Bryce Wilson (AKA Bryce Luvah), which signed to Epic Records and scored a gold-selling Top Ten pop and R&B hit in October 1995 with "Tell Me," followed by the Groove Theory album, which hit the Top 20 of the R&B charts. In 1996, Larrieux was a vocalist on the self-titled album by Sweetback, an instrumental group made up of former members of Sade's backup band, which reached the charts. Larrieux released her debut solo single, "Get Up," in November 1999, and it reached the R&B charts. Her debut solo album, Infinite Possibilities, was released by Epic/550 Music in February 2000. Larrieux teamed with crooner Glenn Lewis and recorded "What's Come Over Me?" for the Barbershop soundtrack, released in 2002. The two reunited a year later and appeared on Stanley Clarke's 1, 2, to the Bass album with their version of "Where Is the Love," a performance that earned them a Grammy nomination. In 2004, she moved to the Blisslife label for Bravebird, followed in 2006 by Morning. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

One of the best under the radar female singers. She should be up there with the other neo-soul ladies in terms of popularity and flava!

I've been enjoying Amel's music since the days of Groove Theory! Whenever I hear the song, "Tell Me" wherever I am (In a store, in a cab, or someone *trying to sing it*) I will bust out doing the cabbage patch or trying to dance to it! All of her albums are essential. I PRAY and HOPE that SHE WILL PUT OUT A LIVE ALBUM **hint hint* 8-) Come on Amel, we adore you! Check out her website which I may peak my head in every now and then at www.blisslif e . c o m for she has GREAT BLOGS!

I am a Amel Larrieux fan.I love her.She is so very talented.I would love to see her in live concert.
she is very artistic in her own way. I can relate to most of her music but there are some tracks that I can't get into. For the most part she is a wonderful writer and singer, and yes, she was the bomb in Groove Theory!
she's good, but she does go 'out there' a bit too far for me. of course groove theory was the bomb and i loved infinite possibilitie s . bravebird was just ok for me (do i sound like randy jackson?). she lost me after that. get back with bryce, amel. groove theory had it goin on!
i loved amel in groove theory wow what a voice and the vibe was just off the hook i dont like her too much as a solo artist; although she is very unique and doesnt mimic the fads
ya know keti, as a big fan of indidivduali t y & jazz, i never thought anyone could be too 'artistic'. that was before i heard amel's live improvs go on for several minutes longer than they should have.
thanks for keeping me honest! |

Too artistic? Is there such a thing, lol? I like her jazzy, eclectic, soulful style. Loved her in Groove Theory and yes, she does put you in the mind set of Pheobe Snow! Never seen her in concert.

I really Luv Amel's Music, very creative and a fresh sound but I must admit and agree with Chazz, her performances are sumwat unentertaini n g . Ive only been to one so I cant say much, but it was indeed too much scatting and improv. Was'nt anything new, but the union of her music was really good with the audience, a great alternative to the random Ashanti or Beyonce R&B today!

Great voice, but liked her better in Groove Theory. She's a bit too 'artistic' on her own, in my opinion. Saw her live in a small forum. She was very dissapointin g . She kind of tried the 'Floetry' thing with a dual singer. Too much scatting and eradic 'jazz' type singing for my tastes.
