Amy Steinberg
Biography
Boston-native Amy Steinberg, a powerful singer and distinctive songwriter, was only five years old when she started her study of classical piano. As a teen, she thought acting suited her better than music. She was certainly talented enough, winning many drama competitions even before she entered college to get a theater degree. She attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and the Boston Conservatory.

While still in college, Steinberg brought together her first band, Sunny Side Up. When that venture went under instead of up, she landed a part in the musical Hair and went on tour through Europe with the production. By 1997, she returned to the United States and was living in Orlando, FL, where she spent evenings and weekends performing at local clubs. She joined up with the girl group Sosumi for a few months, but then put together the Amy Steinberg Band.

Other members of the band are Gabriel "Gabe" Williams on bass, Haui Balthaser on guitar, and Bea "BB Queen" Gayle on drums. Barry Kerch replaced the latter in 2000. That same year, the group released its debut full-length recording, Sky High. The album carries acoustic, female empowering numbers like "Superwoman," "All We Are," and "Mother Moon," as well as tracks like "Instantly" and "Run Don't Walk." The Steinberg band has other, much bolder numbers to offer, such as "Post-Orgasm Cigarette" and "I Must Get Laid," that for the time being, are saved for some of the band's energetic and dynamic live club shows.

When not working with her excellent group, Steinberg spends a number of days each week teaching piano and vocal to students of all ages. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide
