Angra
Biography
Angra was formed in 1991, picking up where Viper had left off playing neo-classical progressive metal. Singer Andre Matos left Viper after the Theatre of Fate album due to creative differences. Andre soon hooked up with guitarist Kiko Loureiro to form Angra; they were joined by bassist Luis Mariutti, guitarist Rafael Bittencourt and drummer Marco Antunes. After a demo entitled Reaching Horizons, Antunes was replaced on drums by Ricardo Confessori. This completed the lineup for their first full-length album, Angels Cry, which met with critical and commercial success in Brazil and Europe. It was mostly a hard progressive metal set, slowing down only for a remake of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights." Two years later, in 1995, Angra recorded their second album, entitled Holy Land. While maintaining the same core sound as Angels Cry, Angra showed subtle Brazilian influences much more on Holy Land in the rhythms and backing vocals. Two EPs, Holy Live and Freedom Call, appeared between 1996 and 1997. The next album, Fireworks, released in 1998, is a more straight forward hard rock album. The classical influences from Angels Cry and the Brazilian influences from Holy Land are both gone, being replaced by straight forward metal. In 2001 longtime vocalist Andre Matos left the group and was replaced by Edu Falaschi. The resulting album, the prog/neo-classical metal Rebirth, was a return to form for the group. They followed that record's success with Temple of Shadows in 2005. ~ David White, All Music Guide

My favorite f**king band EVER. I'm such a fan now, that I am going to get them tattooed on me. I discovered Angra during my first few listens on pandora, but I had only heard "Salvation Suicide" and "Scream Your Heart Out". I liked those songs, but I didn't love them. I got ahold of Aurora Consurgens just because of those two songs however, and listened to the whole album. I couldn't find a song I didn't like. Shortly after I grabbed Fireworks, ToS, Holy Land, and Angels Cry. I LOVE ANGRA!!! \m/

Make that two Angra songs I've thumbed up now, since Rebirth just played and it is freaking awesome.

what makes James Labrie's voice wimpy? Surrounded, space dye vest, wither, all great songs...ever y t h i n g else andyczech i agree! cheers!

Very cool to see a band like this coming out of Brazil, most seem to be from Scandinavia for some odd reason. Or the countries close to them, at least.
Nobody ever mentions the bass player...lis t e n close, this guy is good...bette r than most!

I am certainly no fan of slow sogs but Angra is clear exception here. They are so different from other metal bands - it probably helps that they are from Brazil - the latino taste for melodic appeal to any music is all evident in their stuff. I love them. And to the dude who uses profanity in every other word: get a life, please....
to bury.amy: thier "cheesy" songs are way better than wimpy voice of James LaBrie on Dream Theater. In my opinion, Angra is the only band that can make heartwrenchi n g slow songs about human relations, and melody wise, they are unmatched. The only musicians who can even come close in slow pieces are Jeff Beck and Vai, but in their case, virtuosity makes their quitar sing instead of a singer. Just listen to the harmonies and how smart the arrangements are, with tasty guitar double licks. I am cert

Dude, look up the bonus track on Aurora Consurgens called "Out of This World". Words can't explain... F**king masterpiece! I'm about to cry it's so f**king awesome! Ever hear a song that's just so f**king cool it makes you feel like crying like a big p**sy? Holy s**t! THE MUSIC OF THE GODS! \m/>_<\m/

OMG! I love synchronized guitar playing, especially at high speed! More bands should train and do this! :D
These guys kick a**, Pandora. Keep feeding my head at keyWestRoXra d i O . . .
"Spread Your Fire", "Nova Era", "Nothing to Say", all belong as movie credits. Not mega-blockbu s t e r movies, you understand, but I plan on using those tracks in the next amateur-ish films I make. The first few seconds of "Spread Your Fire" are just about as awesome as it gets, although Pandora plays "Spread Your Fire" just a bit too often for my tastes. It's still awesome though.
Nothing to Say was always one of my all time favorites!
listened to some more Angra since I heard it first; it's mindbogling what these guys can do. arrangements are out of this world. stunning. I can't believe that I knew nothing about them until now!
i love this band so much! the only thing that gets me is their überly cheesy songs! sorry, but they take the cheesiness a little too far sometimes! normally i can easily stand a cheesy song just fine.
other than that, ANGRA BE 1337! |
Oh my god, what a temperament, hot, hot guitar....ne v e r heard these guys before. Great sound - anyone knows what setup he uses and what picks? And so clean...Sing i n g is in cool command, the singer obviously loves to play with his colorful spectrum of his capabilities . Nice...nice. . . .

Angra= Amazing!! Edguy cannot touch Angra, with Matos.
Angra over Edguy? OMG, I think you're right, JT! Angra flings me outside the orbit of Pluto (still a planet in MY mind!)!!!!! (LOL, and Avantasia plays right after I make this comment!)
Holy S**T. I just heard "Waiting Silence" off of Temple of Shadows and it was AMAZING.
Angra is decent, but Kiko's solo albums I like much more. I wonder if the person hating on Kiko for Dragonforce have ever heard it.
ANGRA SHOW UP WHAT THE BRAZIL HAS THE BEST METAL BANDS IN THE WORLD..
BRAZIL RULES METAL!!! SORRY USA |
dude can you play as good as Herman Li no so shut your yap you piece of s**t
hey dont hate on dragonforce im pretty sure they can play gatar and sing better then u can
Yeah. Dragonforce does indeed suck. All Herman Li does is repeat the same scales over and over, and Z.P. Theart is a terrible singer. I'd like to see Herman try to pull off some of the arpeggios that Kiko plays. It just wouldn't happen.
How can anyone suggest that this band is even close to the drab repetition of Dragonforce. Dragonforce just tries to cover up their bad songwriting with double guitar solos. They really are the pop of power metal.
My God!! Holy Land is absolutely AMAZING. Matos is serious with his vocals. He does not mess around. These guys (especially with Matos) are incredible.
Holy Land was such an incredible album. They will never come close to it again, especially without Matos.
