Apocalyptica
Biography
The Helsinki, Finland, quartet Apocalyptica comprised classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Max Lilja, Antero Manninen, and Paavo Lotjonen; formed in 1993, the group made waves internationally in 1996 with Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, which combined their formal background with their love of heavy metal. The album found favor with both classical buffs and metal heads alike, and two years later Apocalyptica resurfaced with Inquisition Symphony, which featured covers of material by Faith No More and Pantera. Manninen soon left the band and was replaced by Perttu Kivilaanso. They added double bass and percussion to the mix for 2001's Cult, a collection of all-original material, and again on 2003's Reflections which featured guest drummer Dave Lombardo from Slayer. Max Lilja had left the band and Mikko Sirén joined as the band's permanent drummer. After Reflections was reissued as Reflections Revised, featuring a bonus track with new wave diva Nina Hagen, 2005 saw the release of the eponymous Apocalyptica, followed in 2006 by the collection Amplified: A Decade of Reinventing the Cello. The band returned to the studio the following year for Worlds Collide. Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann appeared on the album performing the German-language version of David Bowie's "Helden." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

@Gideon: That's most likely because you were listening to the track(s, dunno if there are more than the one) which featured the singer from Three Days Grace - most of Apocalyptica ' s music I've heard on Pandora is purely instrumental though.

These guys should go on tour with Finntroll, that would be a f**king epic tour. Or if Emperor could get back together, then Apocalyptica should play with them. I guess what I'm saying is that I think that more folk metal and symphonic black metal bands should use distorted cellos. It'd make for an interesting sound. In fact Cult has a straight up black metal track sans the reptilian vocals, called Fight Fire with Fire.

I usually like violins if they are used in a folk-y sort of way, or if its vivaldi, cuz hes just awesome!! but violins arent bad if you hear them in real life, my sister is getting pretty good on hers, and its nice to hear her practice
@12nights: I now feel obligated to recommend listening to Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B Minor (or anything else he composed really).
Cellos are pretty dang awesome. I usually can't stand violins. The main reason I don't listen to classical music is that the strings are usually so high that they shred my eardrums, like a fingernails- a c r o s s - c h a l k b o a r d sound. It's just annoying.
Seriously, I think everything in music is better in a lower register, especially in strings, piano, and singing. |
Yeah, cellos are probably my favorite string instrument. I find that violins are too high and grating to my ears. Viola seems to have a better high range than cello, but it lacks the low range. Cello just seems to have a great tone and range.

Freakin' great. People are not even paying attention to Willow. Love it
This band Is great, though i would like to here more tracks with just the clean cello sound in its lower register (where some of the most beautiful cello sounds lie). Overall, I give it an A- |

iskesker: If you just heard the song I Don't Care from Worlds Collide, that would be because it IS the singer from Three Days Grace (he has possibly sung on other tracks, but that one I know for sure was him).
And no, not everyone in Finland plays some sort of metal - take Poets Of The Fall for instance. |
LOL, my brother said the same thing iskesker, still a good band though, first intro to thrash metal. So far i like it.
my gawd is this all the Finnish play? and the singer sounds like the singer from three days grace
The cello is an amazingly versatile instrument with a massive range that far outstrips that of the other strings - while I enjoy a varied string section, you really can't go wrong with the cello.
does anyone know if theyre gonna release any new material soon? that would be really awesome...
I'm getting shitfaced off of drinking Cod Liver Oil, Glycerin, & Cough Suppressant! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
These guys are a force of nature, I swear to god, and they don't even have a vocalist.
Honestly, I like it better when they play without one. |
They remind me of a harder version of the section quartet, only with all cellos instead of a variety of string instruments. its very cool!
A fantastic band - these men are incredibly talented and must be highly appreciated. They have inspired me to practice the cello and truly appreciate classical music for what it is.
I just picked up Worlds Collide at a nearby record store, I love it! I think my favorite songs are I'm Not Jesus and Stroke.
So you listen to this?
Why? When y*u can be liste*ing to TR*E Met*l GODSMA*K \/\/|||_|_ 0\/\/ |

These guys are awesome, beyond awesome!! Love the music!!
Mentioning the Hall of the Mountain King just reminded me that I still need to make certain classical music fans that I'm related to listen to Epica's The Classical Conspiracy.
Was listening to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and totally didn't recognize it until they got to the dodododo dododo dododo dodododododo do do do do do dooooo (and you all know which part that is, don't you.) and then I was like OMG.
Love these guys, great music. :) |

I know who I am Willow. I am a little boy who grew up with no daddy in the house and 3 sisters. I know that I am destined to wear big womans clothing and size 13 high heels. But one day I will get HIV or AIDS and you wont have to deal with me:) |
Hmm...
Though I have yet to get into this band's original material, I LOVE their covers of "Enter Sandman" and "In The Hall Of The Mountain King". |
Pandora is looking into Reflections. They're also looking at Skyclad, so hopefully they'll get them and make us happy.
I think their music is plenty heavy--espec i a l l y for a group of guys who play the cello!
Is it just me, or does the song "Farewell" off Apocalyptica make anyone else teary? |
I enjoy Apocalyptica but it gets really boring after about 30 minutes. I would say that other groups out of Norway and Finland are doing much better s**t than these people. The new stuff holds my attention a little longer but some of the s**t needs to bang a little harder for sure if they plan on staying around.
amazing! words can't describe how great apocalyptica is
