Arctic Monkeys
Biography
Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, the Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed the Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. A year prior, Turner and Cook received guitars for Christmas. From there, these teenagers made practicing an obsession, memorizing hits by the White Stripes and the Vines. A deal with Domino, the label home to Franz Ferdinand and Clinic, followed in spring 2004. Rambunctious first single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" debuted at number one on the U.K. singles chart in October 2005. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was issued in January 2006; within a day of its release, the album sold 118,501 copies in the U.K. -- and over 350,000 its first week -- setting a record for more records sold than the rest of the Top 20 album chart combined. In America, the album scraped the bottom of the Top 40. The Arctic Monkeys wasted no time releasing new material, and that spring the EP Who the F**k Are Arctic Monkeys appeared. On their first North American tour, bassist Andy Nicholson sat out due to fatigue.
Nick O'Malley temporarily stepped in to play the tour, and when the band announced that Nicholson was out of the group in June 2006, O'Malley was ultimately named a permanent member. The Arctic Monkeys' good fortune continued when that fall they were named the recipients of the 2006 Mercury Prize, the prize money from which they donated to an undisclosed charity. That same year, the guys also nabbed Best British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards and Best New Band and Best British Band at the NME Awards. (NME also made the bold assertion that the band's debut was one of the Top Five British albums ever released.) Weathering through the hype, the Arctic Monkeys kept working and their sophomore album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, surfaced in April 2007. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

My Oasis wannabe comment comes from Alex Turner using his accent the same way that Liam uses his, but is nowhere near as good! It was just my opinion...

"A year prior, Turner and Cook received guitars for Christmas." Makes me want to play right now, to bad its 10:30 Pm here. I could listen to these guys all night(but again i wont).

i can actually hear what there saying u like the other bands. there awsome top of the list baby!!!!!!!! ! !
I love the energy in their songs. I can't help but forget about my problems and get into the songs. I also love their clever lyrics.
oasis wannabees? Oasis sucks!!! who would even WANT to be like them? plus they sound nothing alike.
arctic monkeys are amazingly talented.... a certain romance is by far my fave. song though. |
These guys are great. I love them. To the music I usually listen to (Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, ect., known as classic rock) these guys are unique and refreshing. "Mardy Bum" was the first song I heard by them and it was love at first listen.
see, i like the monkeys and their music, but it gets a little repetitive, wouldn't you agree? like, they have one definitive sound that they play over and over. maybe i haven't explored them enough but its my opinion that a band should inspire people to explore their music by interesting their listeners in the music, not boring them so much that they explore just to see if there's anything worthwhile.

I'm sorry but i'm gonna have to compare these guys to the beatles, they are amazing. They have good sound, i can't wait for their next album
Top notch band, dealing in well assembled punk songs with great energy. Any title track is well worth a listen, and Favourite Worst Nightmare is my favo(u)rite of their albums. They're overrated in England (what band isn't, it seems?) but underrated across the pond, so enjoy.
they are f**kin amazing. Arctic Monkeys are f**kin groovy and i dont care what anyone says.

i LOVE the view from the afternoon. by far the best song, personally it seems the best. great bass line n the drummer seems to be totally enjoying himself. yummmmmm. . . . . . as far as the debate on their ties to the punk genre - i can see old, classic punk influences somewhat permeating through but they definitely cannot be classified as punk or pop or anything of that sort. they are what they say they are - brit rock.
stick to appreciating the music n not what stereotypes they fall under. |
It took me a while to get into them, but now I can't get enough of them.
I don't really care for this band. To me, they're very overrated. I've tried listening to them to see what the hype is about, but their music didn't impress me at all. I do like their remake of the old "Baby I'm Yours", though. And I give them credit for their catchy song titles.

This Group is amazing. I have not heard a song from them I haven't liked. Their music has a great since of variety and they have some true talent when it comes to musicality (meaning complex rhythms, meters, and keys). Both are scarce attributes of many new bands.

While I enjoy their music, I don't think their the best coming out of the UK right now. While they are the most Hyped. Plum_7371 don't underestimat e the rest of us. I wasn't even born (in fact it was my parents who had the purple hair and converse) but some of us still get our education with Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys, The Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies ect.
Ok Aron, I'll admit... I thought that madlilly4 was high, too. I immediately thought of Butthole Surfers, Fugazi, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Minor Threat... and yes, they ARE ol' school (like me and you), but the truth is, pop punk is different and is aging folks like you and me... poor ml4 may have been wearing diapers when we were brooding at home with our converse and purple hair. We got our education through the angry teachings of Rollins,Lear y and Jello.
Meh, I like'em. They have a semi-unique sound to them, and whats more...I DON'T GET SICK OF LISTENING TO THEIR SONGS! *dramaticgas p *
That never happens...xP |
Not too bad for monkeys, nice mellow nightime relaxation music, and they do have an original sound. What they ARE NOT is anywhere close to punk, madlilly4. Not one to like pissing on a campfire, I will stear you in the direction of punk so you know what I'm talking about- Bad Brains, Misfits, Black flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, and D.R.I. are some of the oldschool bands. I suggest if you want to hear punk, start there- Rock on!!!
i love this band...they are one of my fav pop punk bands...more punk then pop
i first heard this band on pandora. I've been listening to their albums ever since :)
do i detect a bit of "XYZ" by Rush???eh? eh?
great sound and i like the bit of pop. |
i heard this band back in 05 from a friend...i felt an instant connection with the music. Turner's lyrics are so easy to relate to. These guys are easily my favorite band...not because of his accent or their now extraordinar y fame, but because i enjoy hearing quality music that actually projects meaning.

The Arctic Monkeys are my favorite artists currently. They are the sole reason I went to the Coachella music festival in 2007. They are simply amazing. They have simple riffs and bass grooves, but it's THERE, ya know? There's no escaping their sound. They are in no way the first band to ever do this, but they certainly are astounding. Check out 505, and No Buses for their underated and softer songs. I love Certain Romance, but so does the next guy. Also, if you like these guys, check out Klaxons
