Assemblage 23
Biography
Assemblage 23 is the brainchild of Seattle-based Tom Shear, who spent a decade on various electronic projects before finding success as a respected EBM act. For live performances he is accompanied by Paul Seegers on keyboards and Kevin Choby on electronic drums.
Although he had previously written music, it wasn't until 1988, when, at a concert by Depeche Mode, Shear was inspired by the industrial sounds spun by the opening DJ. He soon shifted from instrumental synth-pop (under the name Man on a Stage) to a combination of his punk, synth-pop, and industrial influences. Changing the name to Assemblage 23, Shear self-released Wires in 1992, with little interest from record labels. In the mid-'90s, he produced tracks for a side project called Nerve Filter, exploring dark, instrumental techno (previous endeavors included playing bass for the Advocates, as well as the short-lived synth-pop project Procession). Finally, in 1995, Arts Industria released the first Assemblage 23 track, "Graverobber," on a compilation. In 1998, Canadian label Gashed signed Assemblage 23 and the following year released its first full-length, Contempt. In 2001, the follow-up, Failure, a mature recording of electro and industrial dance, was issued and found popularity in dance clubs. After difficulties with Gashed, Assemblage 23 signed with Metropolis in 2001, re-releasing Contempt and Failure. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

you like this? try Electrovot!! just herd them last week, they sound great.
frankly the musical element of A23 isn't anything revolutionar y or amazing, but I must admit that Shear's lyrics are pure genius.
Lol sorry vash, didn't mean to get your hopes up. Just took the name from one of my favorite bands. But your not the first who wondered if i was male or female with the name sirenia.
Interesting, sirenia... From all the posts that I've seen of yours, I've always assumed that you were a girl. Unless you're one of those WNBA women with that size 13 heel you wear...
Vash the stampede- I have a size 13 that can make a impressive and memorable imprint on your face hahahaha!!
Hey Assemblage 23 is a great band! And always will be and Tom Shear
is a great vocalist and lyricist. Very Rememberable ! ! ! |
sirenia1313- I'm guessing you're not all that impressive nor memorable either hahahaha!! Tom Shear ftw!
I saw them live a few years back and i was not impressed with their live show. They are much better on CD.
yea assemblage is pretty cool
i saw them live a couple of years ago good stuff!! |
I absolutely LOVE the sounds and fluidity that Tom creates. His music definitely makes you wanna shake your azz! Such strong beats partnered with awesome techno mixes....tot a l l y kick azz!
I've always been a big Nails fan, and I also enjoy some electronica/ t r i p hop, and this seems to be the middle ground. Really interesting music, and a great find.
Assemblage 23, nothing else to say is pure skill and amazing music. His lyrics and music beats are awesome! His music does in fact induce emotion and i think it's awesome. Can't wait for more from tom!

I was going through some old ticket stubs and realized I saw these guys live a couple years ago and completely forgot about it. Now I remember the show being alright but otherwise nothing special. Oh well can't win them all :)
Absolutely brilliant stuff!! This guy is a wonderful lyricist and musician! His vocals induce some emotions, too. That takes talent for anyone to do. Hail Tom and his Assemblage 23 project!
Vocals make me think of Crocodile Shop for some reason... or maybe a slow Chemlab. Anyways, this is great music.
I find it difficult to find this guy's music in Winnipeg- no-one carries it, dammit. I find "Disappoint" to be his signature piece for me. Anyone who could write a moving piece of music like that about the suicide of his father has something right going on in his work. It's hard to sing along with it- I tear up every time.
very good music. like the lyrics, just as you said, dark & pretty
I'm a big electronica fan yet I have never listened to this guy.
One of THE elite lyricists in music today (IMO). Not to mention the music and vocals that meld perfectly. Still riding at top in this small obscure genre of music. 5 album masterpieces !
A23 is one of the most talented, incredible 'groups' I've even had a privilege of listening to. Tom's lyrics find a foothold within everyone, regardless of sex, race or creed. Would it suffice to say I like it? :)
i've seen them live twice now... Tom is one of the nicest people i've ever met. he's definitely one of the best lyricists out there... if you don't own Storm something is wrong with you.
I love Horizon also. Another great artist if your into the dark type of techno is E Nomine. They are from Germany, and if you can understand German then you should totally check them out.
If you like this artist, check out the album Macrophage by S.U.N. Project. The track called Longevity (by Assemblage 23) would fit right in to the tracks on Macrophage.
Agreed with the comment below. Horizon is amazing in every way. I also nominate Divide as one of his best; even if it's just for the lyrics.
Much of A23's lyrics is very intellectual , from subjects like human nature to enlightenmen t . I love it when you can hear emotion in the music. Great artist! |

never heard of this artist, but am very interested in listening to more.
