Bilal
Biography
For Bilal Sayeed Oliver, dreams started falling into place quite rapidly. A self-confessed jazz junkie from Philadelphia, PA, Bilal started out by singing in small clubs until he began training in jazz and big-band arrangements at the Mannes Music Conservatory in New York. With this formal training, the singer/songwriter learned to sing opera in seven languages. His debut album, 1st Born Second, is a collection of songs entirely by the artist himself, right down to the music, lyrics, and notes. His single "Soul Sista" appears on the Love & Basketball movie soundtrack. In addition, Bilal sang the hook on Common's "The 6th Sense" with neo-soul singer Jill Scott. He also scats and plays keyboards. Bilal has appeared on Common's Like Water for Chocolate, Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 3: Street Soul, and has written and produced for the likes of Erykah Badu. Bilal, the same musician who has called jazz "the original booty shake," is also known for heaping truth in his music. Talks of record contracts came about when Bilal met brothers Fa and Damu Mtume, creators of Moyo Entertainment, in 1995 at a Philly barbershop. After hearing his demo, the Mtumes asked Bilal if he was interested in becoming a recording artist. Eventually Bilal moved to Brooklyn, NY, and began gigging around the city until his tape landed in the hands of Erykah Badu, for whose Mama's Gun album he appeared and produced. Bilal is a member of the Soulquarians collective, along with Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Q-Tip, and D'Angelo. ~ Kerry L. Smith, All Music Guide

Yes Bilal we miss you very much. We need you and other artists back on the scene. Real music, real musicians, real love.

I saw him here in Houston at the Maxwell concert. He was singing some of Common's songs and he cut all his hair off. He looks awesome!!!
I just saw Bilal at a Maxwell concert. To be honest, I didn't know who he was until Common introduced him. He didn't do justice to an EW&F song, but redeemed himself with later in the show.
I had never heard anything like Bilal til him and nothing like him since.
Where is he? where can one catch him nowadays? I loved his stuff and would love to hear more.. Moni |
Brotha, please keep doing your duty and produce some more candy for my ears.
I fell in love the moment I heard his voice. Can't wait to hear him in concert.
I've seen Musiq, D'Angelo, E Badu, Dwele, Jill Scott, Maxwell, etc...all in concert. Bilal performed at the Conga Room in LA. By far the most soul-filled show I have ever seen. Bilal is like the PRINCE OF SOUL. His church like energy with his Prince like mood swings...LOV E IT. I'd see him again. His show is a definite MUST SEE!
maybe you had too much to drink, as his studio work is incredible, but live its on a whole other level. ditto in regards to that soulquarian album... but you had me at soul sister :)
I wish he would put out some more music other than what is on his myspace page. I will admit, the last time I saw him in concert it was a disappointme n t . He screamed and hollered - and he has talent waaaay beyond that!
I knew B was a special talent within the first few notes of Soul Sister. I vibed with the eventual album from start to finish. I had no idea of his background, and am mextremely impressed. A Soulquarian album would be album of the decade!!!
I have totally been sleepin on Bilal...Grea t . . . I am actually at loss for words..his style is right up my alley...imme d i a t e fan...
Bilal is a true artist. Gosh I can't wait for him to bless us again with another CD....
If you don't think this is brilant music, you must listen to something I haven"t herd as of yet. His whole cd was funky, the type of cd that you could just let run and relax. I mean he can only sing opera in seven languages, I mean damm that's talent for real!Hope to hear something sooner than later.
I know his album was scrapped when it was leaked on the internet. (I must admit, I downloaded it, it's BANANAS!!!) When is he going to release another one, or is he having label problems
The Soulquarians need to put something out instead of being just a collective!! !
accarranza, you obviously don't know good music. I pray that you one day get hipped!!!
This awful song makes me want to grow dreads and stuff them in my ears. If Stevie Wonder wasn't deaf, he would probably vomit if he heard this garbage.
i want him to make more cds i have heard this cd and he has not made nothing else
What ever happen to him, I have only one of his disc and I wish he had never left. I had almost forgot about him. Hopefully he makes a comeback.
okay, i was sssoo geeked to see bilal in the D. (he came with Jill Scott). I am soooooooo pissed!! he sung three songs!!! and only one song off 1st born second. like, come on. when people go to a concert, we wanna sing along with the artist. I don't know what he was thinking or what he was on. I had seen jill b4 in concert. so, I purchased my ticket SOLELY to see Bilal. Some real bullshit. I am disappointed .
I love your music. I'm traditionall y a gospel artist but I love, love, love your music
Bilal is the S**T!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This cd has stayed in my rotation seen its release - 2001. He is FINALLY coming to the D - Detroit! I'll be the chick bobbing her head off in the front row. Love ya - Sometimes!!
This is the most played CD on my ipod.
As an artist, songwriter, singer, musician and creative personality he demonstrates similarities to Prince. Inorder to have the success and longevity of the Artist formerly known as...Bilal needs to increase his productivity . Drop another one 1st Born as a second child. |

I love this album, one of the Neosouls greats!!!!! Very Nice!!!!!
