Black Eyed Peas
Biography
Positive messages and breakdancing are integral parts of hip-hop culture, but by 1990 those elements had been temporarily eclipsed by the tough gangsta image and bleak but compelling lyrics of West Coast groups like N.W.A. However, despite sharing a zip code, Black Eyed Peas' vision goes beyond the cracked-sidewalk vignettes and sampled gunfire of Los Angeles' gangsta style. The socially conscious group's earliest connections go back to high school, when will.i.am and apl.de.ap were part of Tribal Nation, a breakdancing crew. Eventually the pair focused more on music -- hip-hop, specifically -- and split off into their own as Atban Klann, their esoteric name an acronym for A Tribe Beyond a Nation. Eazy-E's Ruthless Records signed the group in 1992, but many in the Ruthless camp were puzzled by the group and the enthusiasm of Eazy, who had no problem reconciling his own gangsta style with the peace-minded breakdancing of Atban. Although an album was recorded, Ruthless shelved it, unsure how to market a group whose style wasn't dependent on violent braggadocio like N.W.A.
The death of Eazy-E in 1995 signaled the end of any further deals with Ruthless. Undaunted by the experience, will and apl recruited another dancer/MC, Taboo, and reappeared as Black Eyed Peas. BEP began playing shows around L.A., impressing hip-hop fans with their mike skills and dazzling them with their footwork as well. In 1998 their debut, Behind the Front, was released to critical acclaim -- not only for the trio of MCs, but for their live band and backing vocalist Kim Hill as well. Featuring guest appearances from Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, De La Soul, and Macy Gray, BEP's sophomore effort, Bridging the Gap, was released in 2000. The group's third album, 2003's Elephunk, featured a new member (Fergie, who replaced Kim Hill) and became their biggest hit yet, storming the Top 40 with three singles ("Where Is the Love?," "Hey Mama," "Let's Get It Started"). Two years later, the quartet returned with a heavily crossover date, Monkey Business, which pushed them into the stratosphere courtesy of the hit singles "Don't Phunk with My Heart" and "My Humps." Fergie released a solo album, Dutchess, in 2006. It was executive produced by will.i.am who released his own solo album, Songs About Girls, in 2007. Two years later, the hit single "Boom Boom Pow" announced the group's return for The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies). ~ Wade Kergan, All Music Guide

I cannot stop listening to this song and i love the BLACK EYE PEAS!!!!!

I like what TL has to say, he gets it. Music shouldn't be about whats cool and trendy, it should have meaning and depth behind it. Their new stuff is garbage, lady lumps and blah blah blah, what does that really say about their music? Maybe for us older people, I'm 24, we remember the true black eye peas, when they had lucy pearl laying out some smooth vocals. The music they put out now is just filler, there is no meaning there is no message, its just, hey!!! listen, they say its cool
as long as they keep making good songs and music i'm fine.i personally liked all of there albums but Elephunk,Mon k e y Business and The E.N.D. are my favorites.
I wished they'd back to the way the first albums were. It feels like they (Will) is/are trying to please the masses. F that! Joints and Jams!!!!!!!!
Bridge the Gap back to true Hip Hop and stay away from Hip Pop! |
Well I'm not gay and I like Fergie for her talent aslo, but she is nice on the eyes too. Her talent out weighs her looks anyway, so what is the debate about. The people have spoken and that's why they are one of the top draws in the entertainmen t business.
woah. yall need to calm down there ....cough cough Mr.Big Red and Phoenix.evry 1 is entilted to their own opinion...pe r s o n a l l y i think Phoenix makes a better argument but u obviously have ur own opinions. but i guess if u dont like them you might just want to keep it to urself or put it on twitter not on the BEPs page were there are alot of fans!...just sayin
BEP are awesome. Such a different music which makes them a true and unique band Their songs clearly make sense and they bring up issues which are uncomfortabl e for other people to talk about.
and i don't listen to mainstream music because someone says its cool.i only listen to music that i enjoy.and there are artist i listen that aren't mainstream.s o take stupid bullshit and shove it up your a**.better yet why don't you just eat s**t and die.
hey Mr.Big Red
1.i'm a gay guy so i don't like her just cause of her looks. 2.Fergie has an amazing voice. 3.Taboo had more of a role in Elephunk and Monkey Business so your comment that he's always overshadowed by Fergie is bullshit. 4.i have Black Eyed Peas first to albums and like it i just like there new stuff better. and 5.i don't listen or like the Black Eyed Peas because there mainstream or bacuse people say there cool i listen to there music cause i enjoy it. |

Fergie cant even sing, guys watch because of what she looks like from the neck down and she gives all you girls with the same ailment hopes that maybe one day guys will look beyond your ugly faces and ask you out. I'm sure none of you defending fergie and the new black eye peas never heard of them before her or all the great music they had before her. But you know you werent being told it was cool, you were being guided towards acts like coolio and others in the early and mid 90's.
sorry that some of us, well i will speak for myself on this one likes music for the music not because its "cool", or because were told its cool. you people are the same ones that got all excited over acts like j-kwon and his dumb tipsy song. Taboo is the best thing in the Peas and you dont even get to hear or see him because of her, you all bandwagoners are whats wrong with music today and why small acts with great music dont get the publicity they should. now go watch your american idol
Mr. Big Red, i didn't EVEN LISTEN TO THE BEP BEFORE FERGIE GOT THERE! She is the BEST THING THAT even HAPPENED TO THE BEP!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
hey Mr.Big Red why don't you shut the f**k up.why should Will.I.Am listen to your stupid a**.they became mainstream cause they wanted to.Fergie had nothing to do with it.go hang out with Perez Hilton.i'm sure you and him will have loads of fun with each other.
The BEP wont ever be as good as they ONCE were back before that but her face Fergie! Thats the joint, thats the jam, get rid of fergie Will.I.Am!
I love them my weird friend thought their album E.N.D. meant they were breaking up. hope not!
Black Eyed Peas is Awesome.
I luv evry sung they make!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Even with Fergie in it. Does she still make music???? |
oh, their 2000 album was cool too. when they hired fergie, that was the turn of the tide for them. they deliberately decided to do pop so i don't think they regret their decision. i guess they just wanted to move away from rap and hip hop and get into the top 40.
their 98 album was great. that's BEFORE they totally sold out. now they are purely fluff. pop and pop only. they don't even resemble a hip hop outfit anymore.
