Blackmore's Night
Biography
British guitarist Ritchie Blackmore started out as a session player and then was a cofounder of the hard rock group Deep Purple in 1968. With Deep Purple, he made the albums Shades of Deep Purple (1968), The Book of Taliesyn (1969), Deep Purple (1969), Concerto for Group and Orchestra (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 1970), Purple in Rock, Fireball (1971), Machine Head (1972), Purple Passages (1972), Made in Japan (1973), Who Do We Think We Are? (1973), Burn (1974), and Stormbringer (1974) before leaving the group in April 1975. In Los Angeles in 1975, he took over the New York band Elf, replaced the guitarist, and renamed the resulting heavy metal quintet Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Personnel would change frequently during the band's existence. The first edition featured Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald Padavona, July 10, 1949, Cortland, NY) (vocals), Gary Driscoll (drums), Craig Gruber (bass), and Mickey Lee Soule (keyboards). They made the first album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Driscoll, Gruber, and Soule then departed and were replaced by Jim Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and former Jeff Beck Group drummer Cozy Powell (b. December 29, 1947, Cirencester, England) for the second album, Rainbow Rising (1976), and the third, On Stage, which made the U.
K. Top Ten. (From the third album on, the band was credited only as Rainbow.) Carey and Bain then left and were replaced by David Stone (keyboards) and Bob Daisley (bass) for the fourth album, Long Live Rock 'N' Roll (1978), another Top Ten U.K. hit, after which Daisley and Stone left. In 1979, Blackmore, Dio, and Powell added former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover (b. November 20, 1945, Brecon, South Wales) and Don Airey (keyboards), and started to make the fifth album, the U.K. Top Ten Down to Earth, but Dio left during the recording sessions and was replaced by Graham Bonnet. The album included two U.K. Top Ten singles, "Since You've Been Gone" and "All Night Long." Powell and Bonnet left in 1980 and were replaced by Bob Rondinelli (drums) and Joe Lynn Turner (vocals), and the lineup of Blackmore, Glover, Airey, Rondinelli, and Turner made the sixth album and fourth U.K. Top Ten LP Difficult to Cure in 1981. The album produced the U.K. Top Ten single "I Surrender." Then Airey left and was replaced by David Rosenthal. In 1982, Blackmore, Glover, Rondinelli, Turner, and Rosenthal made their seventh album and fifth U.K. Top Ten, Straight Between the Eyes. The eighth album, Bent out of Shape, was released in 1983 and featured the band's first U.S. Top 40 hit, "Stone Cold." In 1984, Blackmore disbanded Rainbow and joined a reformed version of Deep Purple, participating in the albums Perfect Strangers (1984), The House of Blue Light (1987), Nobody's Perfect (1988), Slaves and Masters (1990), The Battle Rages On (1993) and Stranger in Us All (1995). With new outfit Blackmore's Night, in 1997 he resurfaced with Shadow of the Moon; Under a Violet Moon followed a year later. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

I'm confused, the above bio sounds like it's about a completely different band from what I just heard...

always fun to have an artist that follows the principle of change...a static artist is an oxymoron...B l a c k m o r e is worth listening to no matter what style he is playing

The quality of this group is fairly uneven. A few of their songs -- generally about three from any given album -- take themselves seriously, but the rest are generally mediocre or insipid or both. The good songs are worth it, though, if you have the patience to sort through.
I particularly like Windmills. |

The singer is Candice Night, hence the "Night" part of 'Blackmore's Night.' Why the reviewer decided to leave her out of his blurb I don't know. It seems to me that she is a key element in the group.

A very different sound - not easy listening, but wonderful music.
This is wonderful sound, he should keep this up, and keep his personnel, because he really has something woth listening to as far as I'm concerned, and this lade w/ him is very good, too..Okey

beautiful song, this tune is also known as Fayre thee Well. They have so much going on in this song, its an awesome cover, by an iconic band.

I kind of cringe to see a "similar artists" list. In my personal opinion, between Ritchie's guitar and Candice's voice, Blackmore's Night has a sound that's truly all their own. If you know them, you can immediately identify any song by them, whether it's an original piece or a cover. If you don't know them...your loss! *laughs* They are extraordinar y .

One of my favorite bands of all time! I have most of their cds and listen to them constantly! I love how they can do that old medieval music and then give it a rock twist. So talented! <3
If you like her voice, please check out Renaissance' s Annie Haslam. I truly love her voice.
Blackmore's Night has gone increasingly new agey and electric with their past few albums. Seems Ritchie can't stick with one sound for too long. Her voice is very thin, but she's adorable and he's still a guitar god. And I love his live show medieval leggings!

Love his Celtic music but am not into the harder rock style. I play pogo at night and listen to this type of music to relax while playing.
Actually they just got married this month. I thought they were married, then I was on their website and saw the announcement . Candice's website is just covered in wedding stuff.
Very beautiful. The rhythms are especially intriguing, the guitar is of course fantastic. It's always good to hear the guitar in Celtic music, whatever the purists say. :D Just good music.
I wanted a station inspired by Loreena Mckennitt and Blackmore popped up. I first heard "Under a Violet Moon" and loved it! Good celtic inspired music is hard to find.

Excelent! Brings out the WICCAN in me.Have the DVD ,and it is very enjoyable.

i wish i could learn the womens name lol but this is a very good band i love the violin in fires at midnight!

Thank you for adding Ritchie Blackmore to your collection. I love his music! I hope to see their newest album, 'Secret Voyage' up that they just recently came out with. The music on there is FANTASTIC!
Thanks Pandora for exposing me to yet another great artist! Like Ms. Bratager I had assumed Ritchie Blackmore had faded into the realm of Rock n' Roll trivia and "remember when..." riffs. Gladly I add "Fires at Midnight" to my personal list of musical awesomeness.
Thank you Pandora for just introducing Blackmore's Night to me! I'd never heard anything of Ritchie's outside of Deep Purple, and then "25 Years" popped up on my little radio here. I just had to learn more about it...wow. Sounds so beautiful, and so unlike Deep Purple!
I hope Richie will be remembered for Ghost of a Rose as much as Smoke on the Water, It has been a while since I've seen as big a style change in a guitarist since Jan Akkerman of Focus.

If you guys truly love Ritchie Blackmore, I suggest you sign the petition to put him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Type in "Induct Ritchie Blackmore" in Google to sign it, it should be the first one. Currently there are 3316 signatures.

In my personal opinion, the greatest and certainly most mystical group that Ritchie Blackmore has ever fronted. Candice Night has the voice of an angel. (She and Blackmore are actually married; they both wear rings. But since both of them are Pagans , the actual ceremony was most likely a hand-fasting performed by a High Priest or Priestess.)
