Bloc Party
Biography
Equally inspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Gang of Four, and the Cure, East London art-punkers Bloc Party mix angular sonics with pop structures. Consisting of singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist/singer Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong, the band was formerly known as Angel Range and Union before settling on Bloc Party. Okereke and Lissack met each other through mutual friends at the Reading Festival, and discovered that they had musical tastes as well as friends in common. Tong and Moakes soon joined their collaboration, and under the name Union, the quartet issued a demo in early 2003; later that year, they switched their name to Bloc Party.
The group's demo and concerts began to attract attention from both the press and their peers; Okereke sent a copy of the demo to Franz Ferdinand, who invited them to play at the Domino tenth anniversary bash in fall 2003. Early the following year, the band released one of the demo's tracks, "She's Hearing Voices," as a single on Trash Aesthetics. A few months later, Banquet/Staying Fat arrived on Moshi Moshi. That spring, Bloc Party signed to Wichita to release their full-length album in the U. K., and to Dim Mak for U.S. distribution. The band spent summer 2004 recording and touring. Late that summer, Bloc Party, which collected the band's first two singles, arrived in the States. Their debut album, Silent Alarm, appeared early in 2005 and was released by Vice Records in the States to widespread acclaim. Later that year, Silent Alarm Remixed capitalized on the band's burgeoning popularity, as did the 2006 EP Helicopter. A Weekend in the City, Bloc Party's second proper album, followed in 2007. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

I like The prayer (Does it Offend You Yeah? Remix) It's really fun to play the guitar parts, only song I know that is very fast paced but your fingers won't hurt afterward lol.

I wasn't a big fan until my boyfriend dragged me to go see them live. It was amazing. I stole his cd soon after.

Fantastic. I'm a new fan, but I love their work. The vocals are clear and moving, as well as the music. It's a strong team and I can see them playing for a long time.

Great band. I see a lot of "old school" qualities in this band that make me think they are in it for the long haul. They make albums and not singles, they know how to put on a show, and they are not afraid to try different things.

bloc party is truely an amazing band. great live!!! i can't wait for the third album. from "staying fat" to "flux" theses guy can do no wrong. kele's words are so deep and powerful. and matt tong is a brilliant drummer... i love this band... bloc's sound is forever evolving, very avant garde. "weekend in the city" will be the sound of the early 2010s...

When I heard "Silent Alarm," I liked *every* song. Bloc Party is one of the very few bands whose CDs are infectiously awesome. These guys deserve far more airplay and credit than they get in the US. Rock on, Kele & crew! Bravo for the amazing tunes!

you? It's not our fault you didn't recieve enough attention during childhood and must pour your angst out on the internet for some shred of attention. Get a hobby.

Hunting for Witches is probably one of my favorite songs ever. On a side note I enjoy the people who go out of their way to post how they don't like a band. Gratz to you, your taste in music is different than mine, want a cookie? How bout a Five Finger Death punch in your throat? That would make me feel better anyways. Why discriminate against someones taste in music? It's not like you can help what sounds good to you, do you discriminate or make fun of people who have a different color skin tha
