Bob James
Biography
Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. After a period with Sarah Vaughan (1965-1968), he became a studio musician, and by 1973 was arranging and working as a producer for CTI. In 1974, James recorded his first purely commercial effort as a leader; he later made big-selling albums for his own Tappan Zee label, Columbia, and Warner Bros., including collaborations with Earl Klugh and David Sanborn. James remains relatively busy in the studio and since 2000 has released several albums including Dancing on the Water in 2001, That Steamin' Feelin' in 2002, Hi-Fi in 2003, and Urban Flamingo in 2006, among others. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

I still have a signed copy of "One On One" (by James, Klugh, Mason, and Dr. Gibbs) from the 70's framed on my wall. He was inspiring to a young (then) musician and has maintained a amazingly high level of quality music (including Foreplay) for over 4 decades!

Bob James can jam. "Night Crawler" reminds of tracks on his "Lucky Seven" CD. The one that stops me in my tracks is "Glass Hearts" on his "Playing Hooky" CD.

There is a CD that has a track on it that I believe is called "Angels in Paradise," that has an Asian flavor to it, does anyone know the name of the CD?

WHY IS GRAND PIANO CANYON NOT IN PANDORA? YOU HAVE MISSED OUT ON ONE OF THE BEST, HOW CAN THAT BE
RESOLVED? THERE SEEMS TO BE OTHER BOB JAMES PIECES MISSING |
||
IF ANY FOURPLAY FANS ARE READING THIS, TRY LOOKING UP THE 1990 RECORDING "GRAND PIANO CANYON." I PERSONALLY CALL THAT ONE THE PRECURSOR RECORDING TO THE FIRST FOURPLAY ALBUM SINCE IT SET THE STAGE FOR JAMES, LEE RITENOUR, HARVEY MASON & NATHAN EAST. I'M NOT OVERLOOKING LARRY CARLTON SINCE HE CAME ALONG LATER. ALSO CHECK OUT JAMES FIRST ALBUM "BOLD CONCEPTIONS" UNDER THE NAME THE BOB JAMES TRIO. QUINCY JONES PRODUCED THAT RECORD.

Bob James style of jazz appeals to the contemporary as well as the classic jazz audience. Very smooth and grooving.
|
||
How can Bob James be reviewed without mentioning 10 albums as the lead member of the super group Fourplay? James also wrote Angela, the theme to the TV series Taxi.

Saw Bob in concert at a small club in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. It was fantastic. He signed the Essential Collection project for me. He has a very nice personality and he got jokes too. He is awsome as you well know.

||
One of my all time favorite artists. His early projects to me where the best. I called it classical jazz, because in albums One and Two, he took very popular classical numbers (Night on Bald Mountain, Farandole - Two)and made them funkier with strings. I see however, his albums Two and Three are not listed here.
